NEW YORK, N.Y.—The York College women's basketball team had its worst shooting night of the season, and as a result, fell to John Jay College, 48-40, in CUNYAC basketball action Friday night.
York shot 21.2 percent shooting and made just 1-of-9 from three-point range in the loss.
Samantha Bond and
Angelika Ruggiano, who have done most of the work on offense throughout the season, both had rough nights from the field, which played a big part in York's low point total.
Jigcara Grant, however, continued her outstanding season, scoring 10 points and grabbing 23 more rebounds—which pushed her rebounding average for the season to 17.8. For the moment, she leads the nation in rebounding, pulling ahead of Jordan Holmes of Denison University (17.7 rpg).
After the two teams were tied after one quarter, the Cardinals went ice cold in the second. York went scoreless for the first 7:30 of the second quarter and this allowed John Jay go up by nine points at the break.
In the third quarter, the Bloodhounds held a double-digit lead for the majority of the quarter until an 8-0 Cardinals run put York back in the game. Four made free throws plus lay-ups by Grant and
Shauncia McClendon cut the deficit to 32-28 with 1:38 left in the quarter.
However, John Jay got off to a hot start in the fourth. Buckets on a three straight Bloodhound possessions, which included a three from Terri Chu, put John Jay up 14 (44-30) with 6:23 to go. York responded back with a 6-0 run to get within eight, only to see John Jay score four straight points to push it back to a double-digit lead. The Cardinals could not get back in it from there.
Chu led the Bloodhounds with 17 points and Karen Rosario had 15 points and 15 rebounds, as John Jay improved to 4-10, 2-6 CUNYAC.
York falls to 3-13, 1-7 CUNYAC with the loss. They travel to Medgar Evers College on Wednesday at 6 p.m.
