Women’s Basketball Rallies to Top Medgar Evers

BROOKLYN, N.Y. – Led by Jigcara's Grant record-setting double-double of 14 points and 38 rebounds, the York College women's basketball team rallied from a 20-point deficit to top Medgar Evers College, 59-57, on Wednesday night.

Grant, who is already leading the nation in rebounding, jumped from an average of 17.8 rpg to 18.9 rpg. Her 38 rebounds tied an NCAA record which was set back in 1999.  In addition, senior Angelika Ruggiano scored 15 points and now has 986 career points.   She hopes to reach 1,000 by her next game. Samantha Bond chipped in 13 points and Shauncia McClenond had seven point and ten rebounds.

Things looked bleak for the Cardinals early on.  With York already trailing by 11, a 9-0 Medgar Evers run put the Cougars up by 20 points (34-14) with 5:09 to play in the first half. Three-pointers by Nia Tompkins and Elesha Dieudonne helped spark the run. York got a little momentum back, though, by closing the half with a 13-1 run, making the score 35-27 at the half.

The third quarter was all York with the Cardinals outscoring Medgar Evers, 20-8.  A McCledon three-point play and a couple of Grant lay-ups helped York even up the score at 37-37 with 3:16 to go in the third quarter.  York then pulled ahead on an Aveiann Roland three-pointer.

In the fourth, York continued to hold on to a narrow lead.  With York clinging to a 58-57 lead, Medgar Evers was fouled and had a chance to take the lead with just 14 seconds left.  However, Elesha Dieudonne missed both free throws to keep the score the same.  York was then fouled and Sheana Roscher made one of two free throws.  Medgar Evers then threw up a three-pointer as time expired, but the shot was off the mark.

With the win, York is now 4-13, 2-7 CUNYAC, while Medgar Evers is 1-15, 1-8 CUNYAC. The Cardinals will visit CCNY on Friday at 5 p.m.
