NEW YORK, N.Y.—The York College men's basketball team got off to a fast start and never looked back, defeating John Jay College, 73-46, in CUNYAC action Friday night.
York scored the game's first 12 points and ran away with an easy victory. Three players scored in double figures for the Cardinals, led by
Jean Joseph, who scored a game-high 16 points.
Ryan Smart double-doubled, with 10 points and 11 rebounds and
Taron Pascal came off the bench to score 10 points and hand out four assists.
Chad Coachman added nine points, five boards and four assists.
The Cardinals shot 48.2 percent as a team and held John Jay College to 26.8 percent shooting, while forcing 17 turnovers. It was the lowest field goal percentage of the season for any York opponent.
York opened the game with an
Anthony Mason lay-up and then got a bucket and two three's from Joseph to make it 10-0. Coachman then capped the opening run with a lay-up off a Mason steal.
After John Jay finally got on the board, York scored nine more unanswered points, capping off the run with a Clarida three to make it 21-2 with 9:31 to go in the half. York went into the locker room with a comfortable, 31-17, lead.
The game was pretty much over from there, as John Jay never mounted a threat in the second half.
York improves to 5-12, 2-6 CUNYAC, while John Jay drops to 2-14, 1-7 CUNYAC. The Cardinals will visit Medgar Evers College next Wednesday at 8:00 p.m.
