JAMAICA, N.Y.—The York College women's basketball team looked poised for a big upset after holding a lead against the College of Staten Island late in the third quarter, but the Dolphins responded with a furious run in the third and fourth quarter, and ended up winning by a big margin, 84-62, on Wednesday night.
With 4:25 to play in the third, a three-point by play by York's
Angelika Ruggiano put the Cardinals up one (49-48) for its first lead since the opening bucket.
The lead would be short-lived, as CSI went on a 27-4 between the end of the third quarter and beginning of the fourth quarter, turning a tight game into a lopsided contest.
With CSI's Christina Pasaturo and Samantha Flecker leading the way, the Dolphins quickly responded and scored 16 of the next 18 points to close the third quarter with 13-point lead. They continued to drain shots to start the fourth, and in in a blink of an eye, they went up by 22 points (75-53). From there, CSI cruised to the victory.
In the loss, York was led by
Samantha Bond, who scored a game-high 24 points on 11-of-26 shooting.
Jigcara Grant continues to make her push to be the nation's top rebounder, grabbing 23 more on the night to go along with nine points. She's now averaging 17.5 rebounds per game and is second in the nation.
Angelika Ruggiano scored 14 points and is now just 30 points shy of 1,000 career points.
CSI had five players score in double figures. Flecker, Pasaturo and Nicole Vierno each scored 15 points. The Dolphins improve to 9-6, 5-2 CUNYAC.
York drops to 3-12, 1-6 CUNYAC. They will travel to John Jay on Friday at 6 p.m.
