BROOKLYN, N.Y. – The York College men's soccer team played to a hard-fought, 1-1 draw against St. Joseph's College-Brooklyn at Aviator Field on Wednesday night.
In the first half, both teams had offensive chances as neither side had a distinct possession advantage. York had many opportunities early including a breakaway by
Rohan Burrell that was cut short by St Joseph's goaltender Nolan Parr. York's offense was aggressive with standout speed from
Chimereucheya Ezihie that created several scoring chances. It was St. Joseph's who broke the tie at 23:12 as Pandell Mano scored his first goal of the season, making good on a loose ball opportunity that found the top right corner of the net.
York entered the second half inspired as they quickly evened the score at 51:31.
Eric Herrera scored his first goal of the season on a one-touch rebound off a shot from
Chimereucheya Ezihie. The Cardinals poured on the offensive pressure, forcing SJC goaltender Nolan Parr to make 5 saves in the second half alone. The York defense was strong as well, limiting the Bears to only one shot during the second half. The final minutes of regulation were tense and ended with a flurry of scoring chances for the Cardinals.
Luis Cordero just missed to the right after a yellow card was handed out to Thomas Ambrosino just outside the penalty area. In the final 2 minutes York attempted two corner kicks and nearly missed scoring on both. At the end of regulation the score remained 1-1.
Overtime was a battle of attrition with both teams digging deep to find extra energy. Play became more defensive as scoring chances were less frequent during the extra frames.
Ricardo Mendez of York had a shot miss right just as the horn blew to end the first overtime. During the second OT St. Joseph's had four shots, three that missed and one that was blocked before reaching the net with only 20 seconds remaining. The game ended in an extremely hard-fought and physical 1-1 draw.
After tonight York is 0-4-1 and will face The City College of New York on Friday, September 18
th at Aviator Field in Brooklyn.
