JAMAICA, N.Y.— Despite a big effort from York College's
Renee Daley and
Shauncia McClendon, the Cardinals women's volleyball team came up short in five sets on Tuesday night to Brooklyn College, 3-2 (21-25, 25-12, 25-22, 21-25, 15-2).
Daley had a career night, finishing with 17 kills and 22 digs (both career-highs) and McClendon finished with seven kills and a career-high seven aces. Libero
Mary Pamolarco tallied 18 digs, while
Kiranjeet Kaur had 24 assists.
Tiandra Jones also contributed with eight kills. The Bulldogs were paced by Christolia Butler, who had nine kills and ten digs.
In the opening set, Brooklyn jumped out to a 7-2 advantage, but York battled back to take an 11-10 lead, taking advantage of several Brooklyn hitting errors and a pair of aces by Jones. The Cardinals then extended its lead to 20-16, following two Daley kills. Kills by McClendon, Jones and an ace by
Nemesis Gallegos followed, as the Cardinals finished off the opening set, 25-21.
The Bulldogs played improved volleyball in the second set, opening up play with three straight aces. Sloppy play by the Cardinals in the early-going also helped expand the Brooklyn lead to 7-1. York closed to 12-7 after a McClendon kill, but the Bulldogs responded with three unanswered points, capped off by a block from Sasha Roopchand to go up 15-7. They were never threatened the rest of the set and won, 25-12.
Brooklyn used the service game again to take an early advantage in the third set, serving up three aces to take an early, 4-1 cushion. York battled back to even up the score at 9-9, following two more McClendon aces. The two teams then went back and forth until Brooklyn rolled off five straight points to go up 21-16. York had one last run, closing to 23-22, but a pair of York miscues gave Brooklyn the pivotal third set.
York picked up its play to start the fourth set. With the score tied at 7-7, the service game of McClendon once again helped the Cardinals pull ahead. Two aces, two Brooklyn errors and a
Julie Beeson kill made it 12-7. York looked to be in control of the set, until a late run by Brooklyn put the Bulldogs ahead 21-20. York would not be denied though, scoring the next five points—three coming on Daley kills—to force a decisive, fifth set.
Unfortunately for York, the Cardinals could not carry the momentum of the fourth-set victory into the final set. With Brooklyn's Francesca LoCascio serving to open the set, the Bulldogs scored the first 12 points and ran away with the victory.
The loss drops York to 1-5, 1-2 CUNYAC, while Brooklyn improves to 4-3, 3-0 CUNYAC. The Cardinals return to action Thursday with another home match against Baruch College. First serve is 7 p.m.
