York Has No Answer for Baruch in Women’s Volleyball

JAMAICA, N.Y.— The York College women's volleyball team fell in straight sets to a strong Baruch College team by a score of 3-0 (25-15, 25-11, 25-12) at the York College Gymnasium Friday night.

The Bearcats got off to a slow start in this one, with the Cardinals looking like they could pull off the upset.  But Baruch got stronger as the match went on and were never challenged after the first set.

Baruch saw big efforts from Symone Green (9 kills, .500 hitting percentage), Mckenzie Davidson (9 kills, .400 hitting percentage) and Sydney Parks (eight kills, four aces) in the victory.  York was led by Renee Daley, who had nine kills.  Shauncia McClendon added four kills and nine digs.  Mahogany Bogle and Mary Pamolarco each had seven digs.

York opened the first set with an early 4-1 lead, thanks some sloppy play by the Bearcats, as well as a Nemesis Gallegos ace.  The Cardinals still held a narrow, 10-8 advantage following two straight Daley kills.  But Baruch would regroup, eventually taking the lead and running away with the set.  Six aces in the opening set helped them score 11 of the final 15 points to win, 25-15.

Baruch held an early 4-1 lead in the second set, but the Cardinals closed the gap to 6-5 on the heels of a Daley kill and a pair of blocks from Daley and Jones, prompting a timeout from the Bearcats.  Following the break, the Bearcats came out with five straight points to move ahead 11-5. McKenzie Davidson sparked the run with two kills.  From there, Baruch cruised to a 25-11, second-set victory.

With Crystle Dela Cruz serving, the Bearcats opened the third set scoring the first four points.  They continued to hold a lead even after consecutive Daley kills made it 11-7, giving the Cardinals some life. However, the Bearcats pulled away after that, scoring seven of the next nine points to take a commanding 18-9 lead.

With the win, Baruch is now 6-6, 3-0 CUNYAC. York is 1-6, 1-3 CUNYAC.  The Cardinals have a quick turnaround, as they head to Pennsylvania to take on Mt. Alyosius tomorrow at 7 p.m.
