JAMAICA, N.Y.— The York College women's volleyball team struggled with its hitting and fell to Maritime College, 3-0 (25-15, 25-10, 25-20) in a non-conference contest at home Tuesday night.
York played a strong defensive match, finishing with 34 total digs, but could not muster much of an attack, managing just 11 kills on the night. The match featured a number of long rallies, but York could not finish off the points.
The Cardinals hit just -.153 on the evening, compared to Maritime's .233 hitting percentage. Carly Lombardo and Shannon Brady each chipped in 11 kills to lead the Privateers.
York came out playing spirited volleyball, jumping out to a 6-1 advantage in the opening set. However, Maritime slowly closed the gap and took its first lead at 10-9. They would pull away with six unanswered points to close out the set.
Maritime carried that momentum into the second set and were never threatened to take a commanding 2-0 lead.
The third was a hard-fought battle from the beginning, with the two teams going back and forth. The Cardinals held a late, 19-17 advantage after a
Tiandra Jones ace and a Maritime hitting error, but the Privateers would respond with three straight points to retake the lead. After York scored the next point to even the score up at 20-20, Maritime once again closed out the set strong, scoring the final five points to clinch the match.
Renee Daley led York at the net with three kills and a block, while
Kiranjeet Kaur had a team-high nine digs.
Mary Pamolarco added eight digs.
Maritime improves to 1-2 on the year, while York drops to 0-3. The Cardinals will take on Hunter College and Medgar Evers College in a CUNY multi-match held at CCNY at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. respectively.
