BOX SCORE 2 NEW YORK, N.Y— First-year head coach
Renee Thompson earned her first career victory, as the York College Cardinals defeated Medgar Evers College, 3-1 (23-25, 25-13, 25-16, 25-23). Earlier in the day, the Cardinals fell to Hunter College in straight sets (25-8, 25-7, 25-14).
Although the Cardinals dropped a nail-biter in the first set against Medgar Evers, York was able to rebound with convincing victories in the second and third sets, before squeezing out another win in the fourth set to clinch the match.
Shauncia McClendon had a big afternoon, slamming down a team-high 12 kills to go along with six digs.
Tiandra Jones added seven kills and six digs, while
Renee Daley was very efficient, with six kills on just nine attempts.
Nemesis Gallegos set up her team well with 23 assists and
Mary Pamolarco finished with ten digs.
"It still hasn't sunk in that I'm head coach, but I'm just enjoying the fact that we pulled off our first win of the season through fighting and working hard. It gives me hope for having a productive season," said Thompson.The Cardinals did not fair well against the Hawks in the first match of the day. The Cardinals totaled just five kills in the match.
York, now 1-4, 1-1 CUNYAC, will return to action on Tuesday with a home match against Brooklyn College at 7 p.m.
