York College Men’s Volleyball Splits Doubleheader

JAMAICA, N.Y. – The York Cardinals Men's Volleyball team swept the College of Staten Island, 3-0 (25-17, 25-23, 25-14), before falling to Eastern Mennonite University, 3-0 (25-5, 25-17, 25-18) in a doubleheader Wednesday night.

York got off to a hot start, scoring the first eight points of the first set. Randy Adams was unstoppable serving the ball, leaving the Dolphins defense scrambling. However, the Cardinals cooled off allowing Staten Island (4-11, 3-4 CUNYAC) to make its way back in the game. At the first timeout, York (6-12, 5-2 CUNYAC) led 16-12, getting outscored 12-8 after its 8-0 start. Despite the small run that the Dolphins put together, York closed out the first set, 25-17.
 
CSI came out stronger in the second set. Early on in the second set, York and Staten Island were tied 8-8. CSI was able to limit the Cardinals' strong attack. The two teams were going toe-to-toe. The score was 17-17 when the Cardinals' Frederis Tapia earned a kill en route to a key point after a long rally. York would close out the second set 25-23 behind a strong kill by senior Edner Geffrard.
 
The momentum from the second set made its way into the third set. The Cardinals looked like they really wanted to sweep CSI. They got off to an incredible, 8-1 lead similar to the first set. The Cardinals would not look back from there. Despite a small run at the end of the match, York closed out the Dolphins strongly, winning the set 25-14.
 
The seniors Sebastien Francois and Geffrard dominated Staten Island. Francios finished the match with 10 kills and with an outstanding attack percentage of .588. Geffrard finished with a total of 11 kills and five digs. Randy Adams continued his dominant season. He was the king of the sevens, totaling seven kills, seven assists, and seven digs. Philip Szumanski added 15 assists for CSI.

York (6-13, started their second match of the night allowing Eastern Mennonite (8-5) to get out to a 9-2 lead. The Royals continued their dominating start by preventing chances for the Cardinals to attack. York struggled to set up their hitters and ended up losing the first set, 25-5.
 
The second set started out better for York, getting out to an early 4-1 lead. Playing with more team energy, York was looking like the team that swept Staten Island. The score was tied 8-8 through the first third of the set. York's defense was also better, blocking attacks at the net. The Cardinals played well, but couldn't keep up, losing the second set, 25-17.
 
York's effort in the second set translated over to the third set. The Cardinals started well, exchanging points with EMU. They found themselves tied 9-9 early in the set. However, the attacks by York were thwarted by the Royals' defense. The Cardinals also fought hard in the third set, but EMU pulled away late.
 
York was led Randy Adams, who had eight kills. Along with Adams, Sebastien Francois and Edner Geffrard each contributed five kills. Andrew Hass totaled 17 assists. The Royals were led by Scott Brigham who had seven kills and a .385 hitting percentage. Russell Long totaled 14 assists in the game. Marc Lovell had six kills along with five aces.
 
York is hosting a CUNY multi-match on Saturday. York will take on Brooklyn at 11 a.m. and the College of Staten Island at 3 p.m.
