Cardinals Sweep Brooklyn and Staten Island in a CUNYAC Multi-Match

JAMAICA, N.Y. – The York Cardinals men's volleyball team swept Brooklyn College, 3-0 (25-18, 25-16, 25-23), and the College of Staten Island, 3-0 (25-17, 25-19, 25-22) in a CUNYAC Multi-Match Saturday afternoon.

In a very tough first set, the Cardinals were able to jump out to a 15-10 lead.  The Bulldogs responded with a 5-0 run, thanks to four York attacking errors. The Cardinals used a 10-3 run of their own to close out the set, thanks to Akeem George's four kills and Anson Webb's three kills. The first set featured eight ties and five lead changes.
 
York jumped out to the early 7-0 lead in the second set and never looked back winning 25-16. The Bulldogs committed five attacking errors and were never in the set. Frederis Tapia led the Cardinals with three kills in the set and Randy Adams had two-service aces and one kill. Webb added two kills.
 
Trailing 20-14 in the third set, a Tapia kill was able to pull the Cardinals within five. After a Brooklyn time out, the Bulldogs committed two attacking errors to pull York within three points. York tied it up at 20-20 with kills by Webb, Adams and Tapia. Webb shutdown any hope for the Bulldogs with back-to-back kills to close out the set 25-23, clinching the win for York.  
 
Webb had a career-high 12 kills to lead the Cardinals.  George finished with nine kills, while Tapia had eight. Adams had match-high 31 assists and four aces, while also adding six digs.
 
The Bulldogs were led by Shawn Varghese who had seven kills and Dickson Fend who had seven digs.
 
Staten Island Recap
 
York improved to 8-13, 7-2 CUNYAC, winning in straight sets over Staten Island.
 
In the first set, the Cardinals used a 9-2 run to close out the Dolphins, 25-17.  After it was 20-17, York was able to capitalize on five straight errors to end the set. Edner Geffrard and Randy Adams led the way with four kills apiece.
 
In the second set, York quickly jumped out to a 20-14 lead thanks to Anson Webb's four kills. Staten Island made a late push, pulling within three points, 20-17. On the very next play, Andrew Hass set up Randy Adams for the kill to make it 21-17. The Cardinals then capitalize on three errors—two services and one attacking error—to take a 24-19 lead. Akeem George then put the set away with a kill.
 
After a back-and forth-third set, the Cardinals took the set and match 25-22. At 19-17, Hass had three straight aces, giving the Cardinals some breathing room, 22-17.  A kill by Akeem George and a CSI service error ended any comeback attempt for the Dolphins.
 
It was a balanced attack for the Cardinals across the board.  Geffrard finished with nine kills, while Adams added eight and Webb had seven. Hass had a match-high 26 assists and six service aces and Paramvir Singh recorded a match-high six digs.
 
The Dolphins were led by Mark Palencia's eight kills, while Brian Sheydvasser had seven.
 
York will host Brooklyn College on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
