Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Upset Bid Falls Short for Women’s Hoops vs. Brooklyn College

JAMAICA, NY—The York College women's basketball team gave CUNYAC-rival Brooklyn College a scare, until a late run by the Bulldogs propelled them to a 68-61 victory over the Cardinals at the York College Gymnasium on Tuesday night.

Brooklyn (15-5, 12-1 CUNYAC) trailed for most of the second half, until a 16-0 run late put them ahead for good.  Vanessa D'Ambrosi led the Bulldog comeback, scoring 17 points, including four three-pointers.  Nicole Francomano added 11 points, eight rebounds and seven assists, while Karen Mak scored 12 points.

York (7-12, 4-7 CUNYAC) was led by Samantha Bond, who scored a game-high 25 points on 59 percent shooting, while Tamika Taylor added 19 points, seven rebounds and three assists.

The game started with five straight points by Taylor, as she drained a jumper and a three-pointer during the first three minutes of action. After the slow start, Brooklyn responded with a 10-2 run to take the lead.

Later in the half, Samantha Bond highlighted a 7-2 York run, scoring five points in the stretch, to make it a 21-16 York lead with 8:20 to play.  Brooklyn would once again respond, rallying to tie the score at 27-27 after a Karen Mak jumper with 4:09 left in the half.  However, York would go into the locker room with a 38-35 advantage after Taylor connected on a running jumper as time expired.

In the second half, York looked poised to pull off an upset, especially when Taylor connected on a three-pointer from well beyond the arc, making it 51-47 with 8:57 to go, prompting a Brooklyn timeout. However, the Cardinals' fortunes changed in a flash with Brooklyn erupting for 16 straight points in just four minutes of action.  D'Ambrosi and Nicole Francomano were the catalysts, accounting for all 16 of the points. D'Ambrosi made three shots from long range and Francomano added the other seven on two lay-ups and a three-point play.  The Cardinals could not recover from there.

Next up for York is another tough CUNYAC contest on Friday against the College of Staten Island.  Tip off is set for 6 p.m. at the York College Gymnasium.
