JAMAICA, N.Y.—The York College women's basketball team had no answer for the College of Staten Island on Friday night, losing at home to the Dolphins, 83-58
Staten Island (13-9, 10-3 CUNYAC) was led by Victoria Gallinaro, who scored a team-high 16 points with four steals and five assists. Victoria Crea added 15 points.
York (7-13, 4-8 CUNYAC) got a career-high 24 points from
Angelika Ruggiano on 8-of-14 shooting, and 13 points, 14 rebounds from
Stayce Kay Muirhead.
Tamika Taylor finished with a double-double, scoring 12 points and grabbing 10 rebounds.
Staten Island jumped out to a 17-7 advantage early, on the strength of outside shooting from Jamie Pifalo, who drained a pair of three's. York cut the deficit to 22-15 on a
Jigcara Grant put-back with 11:55 left in the half, but the Dolphins responded with more hot shooting—getting a pair of three-pointers on consecutive possessions from Megan Myhre to push the lead to 32-17. The Dolphins maintained that 15 points lead into the break (46-31). Staten Island's seven three-pointers in the first half had a lot to do with their big lead.
In the second half, the Dolphins continued to extend their lead, but did it more with defense, forcing several turnovers leading to points in transition. A 9-0 CSI run extended the lead to 57-33 with Gallinaro making two buckets and an assist. The Cardinals cut into the deficit a bit, after a three-pointer by Ruggiano made it 61-47 with just over 11 minutes to go. However, the deficit would be too big to overcome.
Up next for York will be another tough test. The Cardinals host Baruch College—who is undefeated in CUNYAC play—on Sunday at 2 p.m. It will be senior day for the Cardinals, with the three York seniors being honored. In addition, there will be Applebee's gift cards given out, as well as the grand prize of a round trip JetBlue ticket.
