Ruggiano and Bond Each Score 23 but York Falls to Old Westbury

JAMAICA, N.Y. – York College seniors Angelika Ruggiano and Samantha Bond each scored 23 points, but the Cardinals fell to The College at Old Westbury, 86-56, at home Wednesday night.

Bond's 23 was a season-high as she looked sharp in the Cardinals' first game since the break.  Ruggiano's 23 was the second-highest of the season for her and she has now eclipsed over 900 points for her career (905 currently).  She is well on pace to reach 1,000 before the end of the season.  Jigcara Grant, who came into the game third in the country in rebounding, pulled down 14 rebounds an chipped in eight points.

Outside of the two notable individual performances, the Cardinals did not have much to cheer for in this one.  The Cardinals kept it tight in the first quarter, thanks to Bond, who scored 12 of her 23 in the first ten minutes.  York trailed 19-16 after one quarter

The Panthers came out on fire to start the second, scoring ten straight in just two minutes to extend the lead to 29-16 and prompting a York timeout.  Crystal Barnes and Raven Pentz each had five points in the stretch.  They would maintain the double-digit lead into halftime.

Old Westbury put the game well out of reach in the third quarter, outscoring York 25-15, to go up by 21.  They added nine more points to their lead in the final quarter.

Old Westbury had a big edge in the rebounding battle, grabbing 53 to York's 33, which they converted into 23 second-chance points.  The Panthers had four players in double figures, led by Barnes, who finished with 17 points and 10 boards. Pentz and Bridgid McNeill each had 14 points.

Old Westbury improves to 8-2, while York drops to 2-9.  The Cardinals return to action on January 5 when they host Brooklyn College at 6 p.m.
