BROOKLYN, N.Y. –
Jeniffer Durazno and
Shanique Hill each scored a goal to lead the York women's soccer team to a 2-0 victory over Berkeley College on Wednesday evening.
Durazno and Hill scored less than four minutes apart in the first half, and then the defense—led by Hill and goalkeeper
Sarah Hilaire—held Berkeley down the rest of the match to earn the victory.
After 30 minutes of scoreless action and several missed opportunities, York finally broke through when Durazno took a centering pass from
Cindy Rodriguez just outside the goalie box. Durazno fired a shot that slipped through the fingers of the Berkeley keeper and into the net.
Then in the 35th minute, York was fouled and
Shanique Hill rifled a free kick from 30 yards out that beat the keeper for a 2-0 lead.
Hill, then helped keep the Knights at bay the rest of the match as she played suffocating defense throughout the match. Meanwhile, Hilaire, who ranks seventh in the country in saves per game (13.13), stopped four shots, including a diving save midway through the first half to earn her third shutout of the season.
The win improves York's record to 4-6, while Berkeley drops to 0-1. The Cardinals return to action next Tuesday, October 13 when they host Yeshiva University at 7 p.m.
