JERSEY CITY, N.J.—Due in large part to some sloppy play, the York College women's volleyball team fell in straight sets to New Jersey City University, 3-0 (25-21, 25-16, 25-13) on the road Tuesday night.
York committed 27 hitting errors, its second-highest total for three-set match and hit -.093, while also making 10 service errors. Despite this, York kept it close for most of the evening and held early leads in both the first and second sets.
The Cardinals jumped out to a 4-0 advantage to open the match, but saw the lead quickly evaporate with four straight points by NJCU. The two teams then exchanged leads until five straight NJCU points turned a 7-6 advantage into an 11-7 deficit. York played catch-up the rest of the way and lost 25-21.
In the second set, York led 5-4 after a kill from
Argenis Contreras, but once again, NJCU responded with a big run, scoring seven unanswered to move ahead 11-5. The Cardinals never recovered from there and fell behind, 2-0.
The third set was dominated by the Gothic Knights. They scored the first six points and were never threatened on their way to closing out the match.
The Cardinals were led by
Shauncia McClendon, who tallied a team-high eight kills and nine digs.
Renee Daley added seven kills and
Kiranjeet Kaur notched 14 assists. The Gothic Knights got nine kills and a .538 hitting percentage from Shege Haxhaj.
York falls to 3-14 on the season, while NJCU improves to 9-7. The Cardinals return to action on Columbus Day with a pair of CUNYAC matches held at Brooklyn College. York faces Lehman College at 9 a.m. and CCNY at 1 p.m.
