JAMAICA, N.Y.— The York College women's volleyball team struggled in a key City University of New York Athletic Conference match on Tuesday night, losing to John Jay College 3-0 (25-11, 25-14, 25-23).
The loss drops York's record to 4-19, 2-6 CUNYAC, while John Jay improves to 8-13, 4-3 CUNYAC. The loss means the Cardinals can finish no higher than 7th in the CUNYAC standings and will end up facing off against one of the top two teams in the conference in the CUNYAC Quarterfinals.
After 2-2 start, John Jay scored seven unanswered with Katrina Zapanta serving. Four of those points were aces to give the Bloodhounds a 9-2 lead. York never recovered from the rough start and fell 25-11 in the opening set.
The second set didn't fare much better for the Cardinals. With the Bloodhounds leading 5-3, John Jay went on another big run, scoring eight straight to go up 13-3. John Jay had just one kill in the stretch, but York made seven straight errors to give John Jay the comfortable lead.
In the third set, York looked like a different team and held a late, 17-14 advantage. However, John Jay chipped away into the lead and eventually moved ahead, 24-23. They would then clinch the match on a York error.
In the loss, the Cardinals were led by
Renee Daley, who had six kills.
Mary Pamolarco had seven digs. John Jay was led by a trio of players, Nyla Lloyd-Clark, Rachel Eng, and Latanya Buckham, who each had five kills apiece.
Prior to the contest, York's lone senior student-athlete
Kiranjeet Kaur was honored for her four years of dedication to the York College women's volleyball team. She still has a few games left in her career, but she will likely finish with over 900 assists and 400 digs.
The Cardinals return to action with their final home contest of the season on Thursday at 7 p.m. against Yeshiva. They then close out the regular season with a road match on Friday night at Purchase.
