Career Nights for McClendon, Daley Propel York to Comeback Win over Yeshiva

JAMAICA, N.Y.— Sophomore Renee Daley had a career-high 18 kills and hit .342, while junior Shauncia McClendon had a career-best 19 kills and 13 digs to lead the York College women's volleyball team to a come-from-behind victory over Yeshiva University, 3-2 (22-25, 25-16, 23-25, 25-14, 15-7).

The Cardinals came back from down a set on two different occasions and turned up their play in the fourth and fifth sets to escape with the victory.  Also contributing for York was senior Kiranjeet Kaur, who also established a new career-high with 41 assists, to go along with 10 digs. Junior Tiandra added a career-high 11 kills, while Nemesis Gallegos and Mary Pamolarco each chipped in 12 digs.

The Cardinals struggled out of the gate, falling behind 6-0 in the opening set because of five straight errors and a Yeshiva ace. York battled back and closed to 7-5 on the strength of three Daley kills, and they eventually tied the set at 12-12 following a Tiandra Jones kill. The Cardinals never took the lead in the set though. They tied the score four times, but Yeshiva pulled back in front each time and then closed it out with a service ace.  Daley was on fire in the first set, finishing with 8 kills in 11 attempts.

The Cardinals got on track in the second set, taking an early 7-3 lead thanks to three kills from McClendon. They eventually extended their lead to ten points (17-7) following a 5-1 run.  Yeshiva cut into the deficit a little, but York went on to win 25-17.

Just like in the first set, the Cardinals got off to a rocky start and fell behind 11-5 in the third.  This time York battled back to retake the lead.  A couple of aces by Argenis Contreras and some Yeshiva errors allowed York to tie the score at 17-17.  The Cardinals then took the lead for the first time since the opening points at 21-20 with another kill by Daley.  But Yeshiva would not be denied, thanks to some strong defensive plays during the final points of the set.

York had its best effort in set #4, hitting .240, while holding Yeshiva to a hitting percentage of -.083.  With the set close and York leading 8-7, the Cardinals pulled away with a 6-2 run, making it 14-9.  They were never threatened from there and forced a deciding fifth set.

It was an odd statistical game with York recording a season-high 56 kills, compared to just 16 for Yeshiva.  However, York also committed a season-high 41 errors, which allowed Yeshiva to keep it close.

The Cardinals had another strong set in the fifth and eliminated any late drama. They jumped out a big advantage early and the Maccabees could not recover.

With the win, York improves to 5-19. While Yeshiva is 2-14.  They will close out the regular season tomorrow night at Purchase College at 7 p.m.
