STATEN ISLAND, N.Y— The York College women's volleyball team traveled to the College of Staten Island for a key CUNY Athletic Conference match against the Dolphins on Thursday. Unfortunately for York, the Cardinals came out flat in this one and fell 3-0 (25-15, 25-11, 25-12).
Coming into the match, both teams had identical, 2-4 records in CUNYAC play. A win would have helped York's chances of moving up in playoff seeding and possibly hosting a home match for the quarterfinal round. With the loss, York can finish no higher than sixth. They have one CUNYAC match remaining.
The Cardinals were never really in the match as Staten Island opened up big leads in the first two sets and never looked back. York kept it close in the early parts of the third set, but ten unanswered points by CSI took a 6-6 score and made it 16-6.
York struggled with its efficiency, committing 21 errors to just ten kills for a hitting percentage of -.177. Staten Island converted 20 kills to just 11 errors.
The Cardinals return to action Tuesday, October 27 when they host John Jay College at 7 p.m. This is another crucial match for York, as John Jay holds a 3-3 CUNYAC record. York could potentially pass the Bloodhounds in the standings with a victory.
It will also be Senior Day and Pink Day at the York College Gymnasium. Senior
Kiranjeet Kaur will be honored prior to the game, and the teams will wear pink to help spread awareness of breast cancer prevention.
