JAMAICA, N.Y.— The York College women's swimming team picked up its first win of the season at Old Westbury on Wednesday night, moving past the Panthers in the final event to win by a score of 47-46.
The Cardinals competed in a double dual meet with the United States Merchant Marine Academy as the other team. York, however, lost to the Mariners, 59-33. USMMA also defeated Old Westbury by the same score.
The Cardinals were trailing Old Westbury, going into the final event—the 200-yard freestyle relay—but the team of
Marissa Buchanan, Jennifer Asitmbay, Briggiti Cruz and
Alexandra Castro bested Old Westbury by six seconds (2:10.49) to get the exciting victory.
Cruz, Buchanan and Castro also played a big role in their individual events to help York earn the win. Buchanan was second in the two distance events—the 1000-yard and 500-yard freestyle—finishing with times of 14:43.29 and 7:24.23 respectively.
Brigitti Cruz was second in the 200-yard individual medley (2:39.61) and the 100-yard backstroke (1:09.87), while Castro placed second in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:26.45).
The men's swimming team also competed on the night but fell to both squads. York lost 58-17 to USMMA and 61-27 to Old Westbury.
Alfred Clark led the Cardinals, posting three-second place finishes. He swam the 1000-free in 14:15.87, the 100-freestyle in 57.92 and the 500-yard freestyle in 7:16.58.
York is now finished with the regular season. They will return to action on February 6 for day one of the City University of New York Athletic Conference Championships. The three-day event kicks off at 2 p.m. at Lehman College.
