JAMAICA, N.Y.— After struggling last week, the York College men's basketball team got back on track with a convincing, 82-67, victory over Medgar Evers College at home on Wednesday night.
York (10-8, 5-4 CUNYAC) was led by
Jaron Williams , who had 19 points, seven rebounds and five blocks.
Omar St. John added 11 points and four assists and
Franklin Green chipped in 11 points off the bench, while shooting 3-of-5 from three-point range. Also contributing off the bench was
James Wolf (7 points, 6 rebounds, four steals) and
Ryan St. John (8 points).
Medgar Evers (2-14, 1-8 CUNYAC) got a team-high 18 points from Matthew Walker and 17 points from Reynaldo Eloy. Valin Williams posted a double-double with 10 points and 11 boards.
Medgar Evers held an early lead in the opening minutes of the game, until York went ahead for the first time (9-8) with 13:10 to go before halftime. From there, the Cardinals took off, going on an 18-3 run over a four-minute span to take a commanding 27-11 advantage. Three-pointers from
Cyril Reid and
Ryan St. John, as well as six points from Williams helped York during the stretch. The Cardinals maintained that 16-point advantage, going into halftime, leading 40-24.
The second half was all York as well, with the Cardinals pushing the lead to as many as 18 points. Medgar Evers briefly got within single digits early in the half, before York pushed it back to a double-digit lead for good on its next possession.
The win snapped York's three-game losing streak and helped the Cardinals keep pace with the teams above them in the CUNYAC standings—who all won last night as well. The Cardinals are in 5th place in the standings but sit just one game behind fourth-place Lehman and two-games behind Staten Island and Brooklyn, who are tied for second place. The top four teams earn a home game in the opening round of the CUNYAC Tournament.
York will return to action on Friday with another important CUNYAC game against the City College of New York. Tip-off is set for 8 p.m. at the York College Gymnasium.
