York Men’s Basketball Cruises to Win Over CCNY

JAMAICA, N.Y.— The York College men's basketball team cruised to a victory over conference-rival the City College of New York, winning 70-60 at home on Friday night.

York (11-8, 6-4 CUNYAC) had a solid team effort with many player contributing to the victory. Ryan St. John had 17 points, connecting on five first-half three-pointers, while Jaron Williams posted a line of 13 points and 11 rebounds. Du'Quan Lawson recorded a season-high nine assists.

CCNY (6-11, 1-9 CUNYAC) was led by Khalil Hamer, who had 23 points.  Anthony Lewis finished with 12 points.

The Beavers got off to a hot start, scoring the game's first eight points with Manfred Cadet and Hamer draining three-pointers.  However, the lead would be short lived, as York rallied quickly to tie the score at 13-13.  Ryan St. John connected on three shots from beyond the arc to help draw the score even.

St. John would then drain two more three's with a Jaron Williams jumper mixed in to give the Cardinals a 23-18 advantage with just under eight minutes left in the half.  After CCNY scored five straight to tie the score, York went on a 7-0 run to take a 30-23 lead. Taron Pascal netted five points during the stretch.  The Cardinals then extended the lead, going into the locker room leading 35-25.

Franklin Green kept the Cardinals rolling to start the second half, scoring the first five points to put York up by 15.  York maintained that comfortable advantage and then put the game away during a two-minute stretch late in the game.  Rashaan Bailey netted seven straight York points, which included a pretty three-point play, and Dondre Jackson nailed a three-pointer to give York a 62-41 cushion—its largest lead of the game.  The Beavers made a late push, closing the gap to 10 points late but that would be as close as they could get.

Up next York is a big CUNYAC game at home on Wednesday, January 28 versus Baruch College.  The Bearcats hold a 13-4 overall record and a perfect, 9-0 CUNYAC mark. Live stats are available.
