Mt. St. Vincent Pulls Away Late to Top Women’s Basketball

JAMAICA, N.Y.— After a closely-contested first half, the College of Mt. St. Vincent pulled away midway through the second half to defeat the York College women's basketball team, 73-58, and spoil the Cardinals' 2014-15 home opener.

Leading by just six points (46-40) with 14:46 to play, the Dolphins (4-1) outscored York 27-18 the rest of way.  Kelly Fraser notched a double-double, with a game-high 21 points and 18 boards to lead the Dolphins.  Christina Barone also had a double-double, scoring 15 points and adding 10 assists.

York (2-4) had four players score in double figures, led by Samantha Bond with 18.  Nia Rene and Angelika Ruggiano each had 13 points, while Stayce Kay Muirhead finished with 10 points and nine rebounds.

The beginning of the game was highlighted by a scoring drought, as neither team scored in the first three minutes of action.  York took a 5-0 lead shortly after, and it took until the 15:12 mark before Mt. St. Vincent finally got on the board.

MSV would recover from its slow start and eventually took its first lead at 9:44 following a pair of Christina Barone free throws.  Barone would then help spark a small run that put the Dolphins up 23-16, capping off the stretch with a lay-up with 7:32 left in the half.  Mt. St. Vincent would eventually go up 35-29 at halftime.

Early in the second half, York closed the gap to just two points after a Bond jumper made it 39-37.  The Dolphins would keep York from ever taking the lead though, and pushed its lead back to eight points with just over eight minutes to play.  A key stretch of the game came shortly after when MSV's Alexandra Gunderman drained three-pointers on consecutive possessions to give the Dolphins a 14-point advantage (60-46).  York could never get within single digits the rest of the way.

The Cardinals return to action with a road game on Wednesday at 6 p.m. against the College at Old Westbury.
