NEW YORK, N.Y.— Led by
Samantha Bond, the York College women's basketball team held off Yeshiva University to earn its first win of the 2014-15 season. The Cardinals pulled away in the final minutes to earn the 78-71 victory.
Bond, who is in her first year at York after playing two years at Monroe College, scored a team-high 26 points on 9-of-21 shooting. She also led York during a key stretch in the final six minutes of action, in which she broke a tie and helped the Cardinals pull away from the Maccabees for the win.
With York trailing 66-64 with 6:10 to go, Bond help spark a rally that gave the Cardinals the lead and put them up for good. She drained a three-pointer to put York on top then followed with a three-point play to give York a 70-66 advantage.
That would prove to be the turning point, as York did not relinquish the lead from there. Bond scored ten of the last 14 points for the Cardinals. In the waning seconds of the game, Yeshiva tried to foul York to extend the game, but the Cardinals made key free throws to seal the victory.
The difference in the game was the shooting. York shot 43 percent from the field, compared to 32 percent for Yeshiva. The Cardinals were also better at the line, shooting 67 percent compared to just 41 percent for the Maccabees.
Angelika Ruggianno also had a nice game for the Cardinals, scoring 17 points, to go along with seven boards and three assists. She was a perfect 6-6 from the free throw line.
Shanelle Baldwin had eight points and 11 rebounds and
Shauncia McClendon chipped in ten points off the bench.
Yeshiva was led by Stephanie Greenburg, who scored a game-high 27 points, while pulling down 12 rebounds. Simee Rosner also had a double-double with 16 points and 11 boards.
York improves to 1-2 on the young season, while Yeshiva is now 0-3. The Cardinals will visit St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) on Saturday at Brooklyn Technical High School. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m.
