BROOKLYN, N.Y. – The York women's basketball team had the lead at halftime, but they couldn't hold on, as St. Joseph's College-Brooklyn (2-0) came back to win 76-62 on Saturday afternoon.
The first half started with two quick baskets from St. Joe's to take a 4-0 lead out of the gate, but the Cardinals wouldn't let them get away too quickly. York stayed within five points of the lead for the first eight minutes of action until they scored seven unanswered points, five of which came from
Shauncia McClendon. This mini-run gave York their first lead at 18-16. The rest of the half went back and forth, as the two teams managed to get to a tie score four different times in the last 10 minutes. Eventually, the Cardinals would pull away a little bit, leading 39-36 going into halftime. McClendon and
Angelika Ruggiano led the Cardinals with 8 points apiece in the half. St. Joe's forward Samantha Retas collected a double-double in the first half alone, getting 12 points and 11 rebounds.
Ruggiano kicked off the second half with a 3-pointer, and York was looking to pick up where it left off in the first half. However, things went south from there for York. The Lady Bears clawed back to score 10 unanswered points and took a 52-47 lead. St. Joe's never looked back, as they scored 40 points in the half to York's 23.
Poor shooting was the biggest factor in the loss for the Cardinals. In the second half, York shot just 22 percent, while St. Joseph's shot 60 percent in the second half and 50 percent for the game. York forced 28 turnovers but was not able to take advantage because of its shooting woes.
Lady Bears Jamilynn McGowan and Brittany Cervino took control of the half, scoring 12 and 11 points respectively. Retas ended with 18 points and 22 rebounds.
York's Ruggiano collected 14 total points and
Stayce Kay Muirhead grabbed 9 rebounds for the game.
York (1-3) will be back in action on Tuesday, November 25
th when they travel to Medgar Evers, in the first CUNYAC game of the season.
