MASPETH, N.Y. – The York College's men's soccer team suffered a 2-1 loss to Baruch College this Wednesday evening at the Met Oval in Maspeth. It was another tough-luck loss for the Cardinals, who have now lost four straight CUNY Athletic Conference matches in which they were tied or led in the second half.
The first half did not produce much action in the scoring department, as York and Baruch were stuck in a 0-0 deadlock in the first 45 minutes. However, in the 17th minute, York's
Wilmer Yunga received a red card, forcing the Cardinals to play a man down. Despite the disadvantage, York played Baruch tough the remainder of the match.
Right after halftime, the Cardinals were awarded a penalty kick and had a great opportunity to take the lead. But Baruch keeper Helder Correia turned away
Jordan Chin's shot to keep the match scoreless. With the momentum on its side, Baruch scored shortly after, in the 49th minute. Edward Humphreys finished off a through ball from Bent Myles, into the bottom left corner past Cardinal's goalkeeper,
Leszek Stankiewicz.
William Rosales scored again for Baruch in the 84th minute finishing off a cross from Alexander Marano, to put Baruch up 2-0. The Cardinals would respond three minutes later, as
Giuseppe Vera would finish off a loose ball and blast it in the back of the net past the Baruch goalie, after a defensive miscue from a Baruch defender, scoring his second goal of the season. Unfortunately, there was not enough time remaining on the clock for the Cardinals to mount a comeback as they lost the match, 2-1.
York now holds a 4-9 record overall, 2-4 in conference matches. Baruch improves to 7-5 overall and 3-2 in the CUNYAC. The loss severely hurts York's chances to host a home match in the upcoming CUNYAC quarterfinals on October 29. The Cardinals have six points (three points per victory) and are tied with four other CUNYAC teams in points. Unfortunately for York, they have played more games than those other four teams, which means they have fewer opportunities to earn points than the teams they are tied with (CCNY, Medgar Evers, Lehman, Brooklyn). York would need to finish in the top four to host a playoff match.
The Cardinals are back at it again this coming Saturday in another crucial CUNYAC contest, as they take on the College of Staten Island on the road. Kickoff is at 2 p.m. at Staten Island.
