York Women’s Volleyball Drops Regular Season Finale to John Jay

NEW YORK, N.Y. – The York College women's volleyball team fell in four sets to John Jay College in its final regular season match of the 2014 season by a score of 3-1 (25-27, 25-21, 25-22, 25-18).

The match had playoff seeding implications, as a win by York would have moved them up to the #7 seed in next week's CUNYAC playoffs.  Instead, the loss puts York in the eighth and final playoff spot.

The Cardinals started off well, rallying from down 20-13 in the opening set to win 27-25.   In the second set, York fell behind again, and trailed 23-16.  They nearly came all the way back again, cutting the deficit to 23-21, before the Bloodhounds got the final two points to even the score.

In the third set, a 7-1 run by John Jay helped take a 9-8 Bloodhound lead up to 15-9.  From there, they never looked back to take a 2-1 set lead.  The fourth set saw John Jay once again pull away midway through to clinch the match.

In the loss, York was led by Shauncia McClendon, who finished with eight kills and a .583 hitting percentage.  Stayce Kay Muirhead also had eight kills, while adding a season-high six aces.  Her eight kills also put her at 762 for her career.  She needs 10 more for the rest of the season to set a new school record.

Also contributing for York was Allison Li, who had 14 digs and Renee Daley, who chipped in five kills and ten digs.

Rachel Eng was the star of the match for John Jay, as she slammed down 17 kills on the evening, to go along with four aces and six digs.  The Bloodhounds improve to 9-11, 3-5 CUNYAC with the win.

York (5-23, 1-7 CUNYAC) will have to face top-seeded Hunter in next Tuesday's CUNYAC Quarterfinal round.  The time will be announced later this week.
