BROOKLYN, N.Y. – The York College women's volleyball team took the loss on Thursday Night on the road against St. Joseph's College, 3-0 (25-19, 25-19, 25-21).
The first set featured nine tied scores, as both teams were neck and neck until later on in the set. At one point, York scored three straight points to break a tie and go up 14-11, but the Lady Bears answered right back with three of their own to tie the score yet again at 14. When the score was matched at 16, the Lady Bears made their move, scoring four straight points, two of them from Chanell Joseph aces, to give St. Joe's a 20-16 lead and never looking back.
The second set was very similar to the first set, also featuring nine tied scores and five lead changes. The Cardinals had the lead at 13-12 after an ace from
Kiranjeet Kaur, one of four on the night, but the Lady Bears managed to win five straight volleys to take the lead at 17-13 and gain momentum. The Cardinals couldn't come back and found themselves down 2 sets to 0.
In the third set, York started out with a bang, winning four straight points to take an early 4-0 lead. However, the Lady Bears (5-10) kept chipping away at the deficit until they took their first lead of the set at 19-18. The teams found themselves tied at 21-21, but St. Joe's finished the set strong, as they scored four straight points to complete the three-set sweep of the Cardinals.
Naadira Patrick led York with 12 kills,
Allison Li and
Karen Werner collected 14 and 11 digs respectively, and Kaur tallied up 14 assists, while St. Joe's Lauren GaNun had a match-high 21 kills.
The Cardinals (4-20) will play their next match on the road when they take on the College of New Rochelle on Saturday, October 18th at 3:00pm.
