Second Half Run Buries Cardinals; York Falls 81-67 to John Carroll

PITTSBURGH, PA – Despite leading by as many as 13 points in the game, the York College men’s basketball team could not hold off John Carroll University, losing 81-67 in the consolation game of the Carnegie Mellon University Invitational on Sunday afternoon.  

 

John Carroll’s Rudy Kirbus netted 23 points and had seven rebounds to lead the comeback.   York’s Ryan Exum (Bronx, NY/ Truman) finished with 21 points, nine rebounds and five assists and was named to the All-Tournament Team for his efforts.  York’s Kevin Lausell (Brooklyn, NY/ Midwood) finished with 14 points and Omari Phipps (Laurleton, NY/ St. Johns Prep) had 13 points and nine rebounds to pace the Cardinals.

 

The Cardinals looked to be in control when Lausell made three straight free throws to give York a 30-17 advantage with 8:21 left in the first half.  However, John Carroll quickly responded.  A lay-up by Chris Zajac and a three-pointer by Tyler Kirsch on consecutive possessions cut the lead to 30-24 with 5:05 left in the half. York held a 36-32 advantage at halftime.

 

JCU then came out and dominated the second half, outscoring York 49-31.  The Blue Streaks scored 28 of the first 35 points in the second half to open a 60-43 lead.  The Cardinals could only get as close as nine points the rest of the way. 

 

York (1-5) will look to get back on track this Tuesday, when they open up their conference schedule against Brooklyn College at home.  Tip-off is at 8:00 p.m.
