Gemma Alexander-Mozeak

Gemma Alexander-Mozeak returns to York as head women's and men’s tennis coach ahead of the 2019-20 seasons.  She had previously served as head coach at York for the women’s team from 2013-15 and on the men’s side during 2014-15. 

Prior to her first stint at York, Alexander-Mozeak was the head women’s tennis coach at St. John's University from 2008-2012, where she led the Red Storm to two top-five finishes at the conference championships, while compiling 21 victories in her second stint as head coach.  Alexander-Mozeak previously served as head coach at St. Johns from 2003-2005, where she helped guide a team that finished 3-7 the year before to a 12-5 mark in 2003-04. St. John's also earned a national ranking for the first time in program history under her leadership, as it cracked the ITA rankings on March 25, 2004 at No. 72.  In 2004-05, St. John's finished with a 13-4 record, compiling its highest win total since the 1990-91 season, and placed third in the Big East.

In between her two stints coaching at St. John's, she served as the Metro Regional Director for the United States Tennis Association (USTA) Eastern Section.  With USTA Eastern, Alexander-Mozeak was responsible for community outreach efforts in New York City. Alexander-Mozeak helped the organization in its effort to grow tennis in the metropolitan area.  She was responsible for helping non-profit organizations expand, access grants and locate sponsors for tennis programs. Alexander-Mozeak also assisted in the planning and design of these community programs.

Prior to St. John's, Alexander-Mozeak spent two years as the head coach at Fordham University, where the Rams went 25-9 during her tenure.

Since 1991, she has operated Gem Enterprise—an organization that specialized in sports event production.  The primary focus was to plan and operate tennis and basketball tournaments, clinics, camps and fundraisers, and to provide networking opportunities between participants, celebrities and entrepreneurs.

Alexander-Mozeak is no stranger to the CUNY system, as she got her start in coaching at Hunter College in 1985, where she led the Hunter College women's tennis team and the Hunter College High School boy's program for three seasons.

From 2012-15, Alexander-Mozeak worked as a tennis specialist at the Harlem Children's Zone, where she was responsible for designing and providing a world-class junior tennis program for at-risk youth in Harlem.

After transferring from the University of California at Santa Barbara, Alexander-Mozeak graduated from St. John's University in 1987 with degrees in Government/ Politics and Theology. She had a very successful career as a collegiate tennis player as well, advancing to the round of 16 in doubles play during the 1985 NCAA Tournament and cracking the national rankings.  In 1987, while at St. John's, she was the team captain and Most Valuable Player, while winning Metropolitan Conference titles in singles and doubles.

The mother of twin sons, Alexander and Andre, Coach Alexander-Mozeak currently resides in Jamaica with her husband, Paul.
