Joviette Frederick '14

Joviette Frederick ‘14 will be joining the men’s and women’s cross country and softball programs as an assistant coach. Frederick served as a consultant for the department to boost the recruitment of female student-athletes during the 2022-23 academic year.

“It’s a special feeling to be able to come back and lead in the same place you grew. It’s definitely not something I take lightly. I know my experience on and off the field and inside and outside of being a York Cardinal will be an asset to the program. I’m looking forward to the upcoming Cross Country and Softball seasons. My hope is to get the players to tap into their passion for the sport and from there, help them achieve peak performance and be a competitive force in the conference. Doing all of that in the same building I performed is just the icing on the cake.”-Said Frederick

During her time as a Cardinal, Frederick was a three-sport scholar-athlete, competing in cross country (2010-11), indoor track & field (2009-12) and softball (2010-13). Frederick earned 2012-13 CUNYAC Scholar-Athlete of the Year Honorable Mention status and was York’s top scholar-athlete representative on the 2011 City University of New York Goodwill Tour in New Orleans.

In four seasons with softball, Frederick stole a program-record 51 bases and finished her 110-game career batting .279 (81-for-290) with four home runs, 44 RBI and 92 runs scored.
Competing in 13 of the 14 meets from 2010-2011, the Brooklyn native shone for the cross country program. A top performer for the Cardinals, she finished with the team’s best time five times, and the second-best result on eight occasions. Running in her only CUNYAC Championship in 2011, Frederick produced a 31:59.0 time on the 6k track, good enough for 34th place.

Frederick competed in eight events across three seasons for the indoor track & field program, mainly running in the 4x400-meter relay. In the 2010 CUNYAC Championships, she combined with Denecia Gardener, Antoinette Smith, and Fiona Brown to place 5th with a time of 4:34.66. Frederick also ran in the 4x400 meter relay at the Molloy College Lions Invitational in 2012, as the Cardinals finished 4th in the 2012 CUNYAC Indoor Performance List.

The six-time Dean’s List honoree graduated Cum Laude from York in 2014 with a bachelor’s degree in Health Education K-12 before earning a Master’s Degree in 2017 from Brooklyn College in Childhood Special Education 1-6.

Since 2016, Frederick has built a career as an educator, having gained experience teaching internationally for both kindergarten (Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia) and second grade (Casablanca, Morocco). Stateside, Frederick has taught first grade special education, been a summer academy and interventionist/multiple language learner teacher, and currently teaches third grade for the New York City Department of Education.

Frederick is a proud graduate of Flushing High School.
