@yorkcardinals Men’s Volleyball sets off on road swing with NJCU tri-match

York College travels Tuesday (Mar. 10) for a CUNYAC showdown at Brooklyn College

JERSEY CITY, NJ-- (www.YORKATHLETICS.com) York College men's volleyball returned to action Saturday with a tri-match against the New Jersey City Gothic Knights (12-5, 5-0 CUNYAC) and the City College of New York Beavers (6-7) from the John J. Moore Athletics and Fitness Center in Jersey City, New Jersey. The Cardinals dropped a three-set CUNYAC affair to New Jersey City (25-12, 25-10, 25-8) before falling in a three-set non-conference matchup to the Beavers (25-14, 25-15, 25-15).

Match 1:New Jersey City 3, York 0 (25-12, 25-10, 25-8)
First Set Breakdown 
  • New Jersey City controlled play early to take a swift 11-2 lead.
  • Consecutive points from the Cardinals trimmed the deficit to seven (11-4), the closest they got the rest of the frame.  
  • The Gothic Knights responded with a 6-1 burst to go up by 12 (17-5).
  • York managed to make it a 10-point margin on two occasions, but did not make a further dent in the 25-12 result. 
Second Set Breakdown 
  • Erick Bacuilima's serve netted the opening six points for NJCU.
  • Bryan Godette's kill capped off a mini 3-0 spurt for the Cardinals (6-3).
  • A trio of smackdowns from Mikey Harte and Alaittim De Leon spearheaded an 11-2 stretch from the Gothic Knights, giving them a 17-5 edge. 
  • Three combined bills by Godette and Alexis Ramirez maintained the 12-point difference (20-8).
  • Nas Paige's kill sealed a 25-10 scoreline for NJCU.
Third Set Breakdown 
  • Jesus Gomez's ace got York on the board (1-0). 
  • A pair of kills by Harte buoyed a 5-1 run for the Gothic Knights to go 5-2.
  • Ahead 9-5, NJCU racked up five straight points to lead by nine (14-5).
  • Ramirez kept the Cardinals in striking distance with a trio of smackdowns (16-8).
  • The Gothic Knights collected the following nine points for a 25-8 victory. Paige served four aces during this period. 
Leading the Cardinals
  • Godette paced the squad with 7.5 points (six kills, one solo block, one block assist) and contributed defensively with six digs.
  • Ramirez had a team-high seven kills and seven digs. 
  • Brian Kim added one kill and two block assists.
  • Gomez produced the team's lone ace and distributed 11 assists. 
  • Enmanuel Guzman Urena chipped in defensively with six digs. 
For New Jersey City
  • Nas recorded an all-around performance with six kills, a match-high four aces, and a team-leading seven digs.
  • Harte spiked down a team-best eight kills and served a pair of aces. 
  • De Leon (7) and Solomon Brown (6) combined for 13 kills.
  • Orchestrating the attack, Bacuilima (16), Faraz Bhatti (10), and Alex Casais set their teammates up on 36 occasions. 
Inside the Box Score
York generated 15 kills on 73 kills for a 1 -.027 attack percentage, while NJCU authored 41 kills and hit at a .453 rate. Additionally, the Gothic Knights had the edge in aces (9-1), assists (39-12), and digs (39-27). 

Match 2: CCNY 3, York 0 (25-14, 25-15, 25-15)
First Set Breakdown 
  • A pair of kills by Nana Boateng pushed CCNY to a 6-0 start.
  • The Cardinals responded with a 5-2 burst to trim the deficit to three (8-5).
  • Two Beaver attack errors kept the margin at three (13-10).
  • CCNY replied with a 6-1 stretch to go up eight (19-11).
  • The stanza was never in doubt, as Amir Nabiyev's ace concluded a 25-14 scoreline. 
Second Set Breakdown 
  • The Beavers kept their momentum with a 4-0 beginning. 
  • York steadily got back in the contest with a 6-4 spurt (8-6).
  • Kills by Ramirez and Godette helped the Cardinals remain in contention (14-11).
  • CCNY went on a 6-2 scoring spree and began to pull away (20-13). Nabiyev spiked down two kills during the run. 
  • A further 5-2 stretch finalized a 25-15 victory.
Third Set Breakdown 
  • Three aces and four kills spearheaded an 11-2 edge for the Beavers.
  • Godette replied with a pair of kills to make it 11-4.
  • Leading 13-6, CCNY scored the next seven points to pull away (20-6).
  • York attempted a massive comeback, utilizing a 9-3 to trim the deficit to eight (23-15). 
  • It was not enough, however, as the Beavers claimed the next two points to close out a 25-15 decision. 
Leading the Cardinals
  • Godette totaled team-highs in kills (6) and digs (5).
  • Ramirez smacked down four kills, served the team's lone ace, and scooped up four digs. 
  • Kim (6) and Gomez (4) tallied 10 assists, and Guzman Urena matched Godette's five-dig mark.
For CCNY
  • Nabiyev served a match-best five aces and added four kills to his stat line. 
  • Antonio Oliveira-Nurse powered home a team-leading six kills. 
  • Boateng (4), Moustafa Elsabagh (3), Brandon Green (3), and Gabriel Linus (3) combined for 13 kills. 
  • Ruben Santiago orchestrated the attack with 17 assists. 
Inside the Box Score
The Cardinals produced 10 kills on 58 swings for an attack percentage of -.155. CCNY totaled 28 kills on 65 swings (.185 rate). The Beavers also got the upper hand in aces (14-1), assists (25-10), and digs (23-19).
