Dominant second half lifts @yorkcardinals Men’s Basketball past Hunter, 84–66

York College remains at home Friday (Feb. 6) for a CUNYAC bout against Lehman College

JAMAICA, NY-- (www.YORKATHLETICS.com) York College men's basketball raced out to an early lead Tuesday and used a dominant second half to secure an 84–66 CUNYAC win over the Hunter College Hawks (4–17, 2–8 CUNYAC) inside York College Gymnasium.

How it Happened
  • Jonte Wallace scored the game's first seven points and accounted for 10 of York's opening 16 points, giving the Cardinals an early 16–2 lead at the 15:37 mark.
  • Hunter responded with a 13–2 run as York cooled off, hitting just 1-of-6 from the field, pulling the Hawks within three (18–15) at 10:58.
  • Malakai Clark ignited the Cardinals down the stretch, scoring seven points as York outscored Hunter 19–18 over the final 10:35 to take a 37–33 lead into halftime.
  • Hunter got as close as three points early in the second half before York responded with four straight baskets as part of a 10–0 run, pushing the Cardinals ahead 51–38 with 15:27 remaining.
  • The Hawks answered with a 13–4 spurt to trim the deficit to 55–51 at the 10:16 mark.
  • York then put the game away with an 18–2 run, extending the lead to 78–56 with 3:17 left on the clock. 
  • The Cardinals extended it lead to as many as 24 points to finalize the wire-to-wire victory.
Leading the Cardinals
  • Providing a spark off the bench, Clark poured in a career-high 25 points 10-of-14 FG, 5-of-6 FT), adding eight rebounds to lead York to victory.
  • Wallace followed with 22 points (8-of-16 FG, 3-of-4 3FG) while contributing nine rebounds, six assists, and three steals.
  • Joshua Jackman recorded his fourth-career double-double with 13 points and a game-high 15 rebounds, while also tallying two steals and a block.
  • Christopher Smith directed the offense with nine assists and chipped in seven points, five rebounds, and two blocks.
  • Jaidan Johnson dished out six assists
For Hunter
  • John Paul Maaba led the Hawks with 19 points and six assists.
  • Jeremiah Otasowie tallied 14 points and nine rebounds, while Georgios Gatsias chipped in 13 points.

York drained 48.6 percent (34-of-70) from the field, 33.3 percent (6-of-18) from three-point range, and 71.4 percent (10-of-14) from the free-throw line. Hunter finished the contest shooting 31.9 percent (22-of-69) overall, 34.8 percent (8-of-23) from beyond the arc, and 73.7 percent (14-of-19) at the line. The Cardinals held an 8-rebound advantage (48–40) and outpaced the Hawks in assists (28–14), blocks (5–3), and steals (8–5).
