Balanced scoring keeps @yorkcardinals Men’s Basketball unbeaten in CUNYAC with 66–64 win over Hunter

York College carries its 4–0 CUNYAC record into a road matchup at Lehman College next Wednesday (Jan. 14)

NEW YORK --- (www.YORKATHLETICS.com) York College men's basketball had four players score in double figures and held off the Hunter College Hawks  (2–13, 0–4 CUNYAC) for a 66–64 CUNYAC victory Friday night on the road from Hunter Sportsplex. With the win, the Cardinals are off to a 4–0 start in CUNYAC play for the first time since the 2009-10 season.

How it Happened
  • Both squads traded baskets early, with a three-pointer by Hunter's Demetrios Konots leveling the score at 11 with 15:19 remaining in the first half.
  • A triple from Georgios Gatsias gave the Hawks a five-point edge (18-13) at 10:50, their highest of the half.
  • Helped by imperious defense, York went on a 10-0 burst to lead 28-13 with 4:49 showing on the clock.
  • The Cardinals got buckets from Joshua Jackman, Benjamin Grant, and Jonte Wallace during this stretch.
  • Another Jackman jump shot extended the advantage to seven (30-23) at the 3:43 mark.
  • Facilitated by a 6-0 response, Hunter managed to trim the deficit to three (32-29) at halftime. 
  • Wallace's fast break layup capped off an 8-4 York opening spurt, extending the advantage to seven (40-13).
  • The Hawks battled back with five consecutive points to make it 40-38.
  • Ahead 44-41, the Cardinals utilized a 7-0 blitz to lead 51-41 with 9:38 remaining.
  • Gozie Chinegwundoh provided four of the seven points during the stretch.
  • Jeremiah Otasowie then took over for Hunter, scoring 10 of the squad's next 14 points to level the score at 55 at the 4:29 mark.
  • Malakai Clark showed toughness by scoring York's next six points, giving the team a 61-57 edge with 2:49 on the clock.
  • Bryce Haynes followed with probably the most important score of the contest, as his clutch three at 2:06 pushed the advantage to five (64-59).
  • In the next offensive trip, Wallace's driving layup with 67 seconds remaining made it 66-61, effectively sealing the outcome.
  • Hunter added three free throws in the final minute, but it was not enough to swing the outcome. 
Leading the Cardinals
  • Christopher Smith led the scoring charge with 15 points to go along with four rebounds and two assists.
  • Clark dropped a season-best 13 points (5-of-8 FG, 3-of-6 FG) in 14 minutes off the bench.
  • Wallace had an all-around performance with 12 points, six rebounds, three dimes, and the team's lone block.
  • Jackman also scored 12 points and contributed six rebounds and a team-high two steals.
  • Haynes drained the team's only two triples.
  • Chinegwundoh (9) and Bryan Godette (7) controlled the glass with a combined 16 rebounds.
For Hunter
  • John Paul Maaba led the contest with 16 points and eight assists.
  • Jayden Jarrett recorded a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds.
  • Otasowie rounded out the double-digit scorers with 12 points to go along with five rebounds and four assists.
  • Kontos provided nine points and seven rebounds.
Inside the Box Score
York shot 38.9 percent (28-of-72) from the floor, sank two three-pointers, and shot 53.3 percent (8-of-15) from the charity stripe. The Hawks shot 34.9 percent (22-of-63) from the floor, 38.1 percent (8-of-21) from downtown, and 63.2 percent (12-of-19) from the line. Offsetting the lack of three and free throws, the Cardinals controlled the paint, having a large edge in paint points (50-20) and second chance points (21-12). Additionally, seven York steals allowed the team to win the fast break scoring battle (16-9). Offensively, the squad committed a season-low seven turnovers.
