Early Johnson Goal Highlights Hard-Fought @yorkcardinals Men’s Soccer Home Draw Versus Medgar Evers

York College concludes a three-match home stretch Wednesday (Sept. 17) with a non-conference tilt against Sarah Lawrence College

JAMAICA, NY --- (www.YORKATHLETICS.com) York College men's soccer continued its home slate Monday afternoon with a competitive non-conference bout against the Medgar Evers College Cougars (1-3-1). After both teams traded first-half goals, the defenses stood tall in the second frame, leading to a 1-1 draw at York College Outdoor Athletic Complex.

First-Half Breakdown
York took the lead 79 seconds into the match after Jamar Johnson turned in a pinpoint cross from Ernest Bawilliam. Derick Aboagye-Frimpong almost doubled the score after his long range thunderbolt cannoned off the crossbar. Mouhamed Diakhoumpa came close to equalizing  in the 15th minute, as his free kick forced Cardinal keeper George Molina (0-2-1) to tip the ball over for a corner. The Cougars' goal came 71 seconds later, as Taye Simon intercepted a ball at the edge of the 18-yard box and placed it past Molina. Both squads played at a standstill the rest of the half.

Second-Half Breakdown
In a stanza with few opportunities, Aboagye-Frimpong came close with a free kick at the 67:25 mark, but the curling effort was parried away by Clirian Nunez (0-2-1). In the 85th minute, Bernado Guerrier's sliding shot for Medgar Evers whizzed past the far post. York responded 52 seconds later with a nice passage of play, leading to Bawilliam's shot landing whiskers away from goal. Great defensive action in the waning minutes by both sides ensured a 1-1 final.

Inside the Box Score
The Cardinals had the edge in shots (18-12), shots on goal (6-4), and corners (5-2) over the Cougars. Molina notched three saves, and Nunez generated five stops for Medgar Evers.
