Fresh Faces Make Impact as @yorkcardinals Women's Volleyball Opens Road Slate at Rutgers-Newark

York College hits the road Saturday (Sept. 13) for a non-conference tri-match at Rosemont College against the hosts and University of Valley Forge

NEWARK, NJ--- (www.YORKATHLETICS.com) York College women's volleyball opened a three-match road swing Thursday evening, facing Rutgers University-Newark inside The Golden Dome. The Scarlet Raiders (5-3) defended their home court with a straight-set victory (25-7, 25-7, 25-6) over the Cardinals in non-conference action.

First Set Breakdown 
  • Rutgers-Newark raced out to an 8-1 advantage. 
  • Tracey Ilderis' kill gave the Scarlet Raiders their first double-digit edge (13-3).
  • The lead ballooned to 15 (20-5) after a smackdown from Fabiana Ayala.
  • A Cardinal attack error closed out a 25-7 stanza. 
Second Set Breakdown 
  • A pair of kills by Zia Lefebvre helped keep York within two points (5-3).
  • The Cardinals managed to maintain competitiveness, as three more smackdowns made the deficit five (12-7) after 19 points.
  • Buoyed by the serve of Olivia Neff, Rutgers-Newark claimed the final 13 points to seal a 25-7 scoreline.
Third Set Breakdown 
  • Helen Bilomasur's kill capped off a 5-1 start for the Scarlet Raiders.
  • Lefebvre's smackdown for York made it 5-2, the closest the Cardinals got the rest of the way.
  • Ahead 12-5, Rutgers-Newark went on a 9-0 burst, helped by three aces from Miley Clenaghan, to lead 21-5.
  • A Cardinal attack error clinched a 25-6 result. 
Leading the Cardinals
  • Lefebvre paced the squad with match-highs in kills (6) and digs (7).
  • Jaymie Mateo added two kills and six digs.
  • Samantha Panameno orchestrated the offense with six assists.
  • Shaday Torres contributed defensively with two digs. 
For Rutgers-Newark
  • Bilomasur produced a team-best five smackdowns to go along with three aces and six digs.
  • Ayala, Yasmin Rodrigues, and Cyan Long were all second in line with five points each. Long scooped up a team-leading six digs. 
  • Cameron Corino (9), Nicole Sullivan (8), and Angelyse Orellana (7) combined for 24 assists. 
Inside the Box Score
York swung 61 times and generated a -.131 rate. Rutgers-Newark attacked at a .368 rate on 57 attempts. Additionally, the Scarlet Raiders had the advantage in kills (26-8), aces (17-0), assists (28-7), digs (37-18), and total blocks (5-0).

The Cardinals (1-2) continue their road trip Saturday (Sept. 13), traveling to Rosemont, Pennsylvania, for a non-conference tri-match hosted by Rosemont College inside the Hirsh Community Center.
