York College softball returned to CUNYAC play Tuesday afternoon with a doubleheader against the Brooklyn College Bulldogs (10-15, 2-2 CUNYAC), dropping 13-1 and 15-0 decisions on the road from Brooklyn College Field.Â
Game 1: Brooklyn 13, York 1 (5 Inn.)
- Bulldog starter Danielle Guzzardi (W, 7-9; 5 IP, 2 H, ER, 11 SO) set the tone in the top of the first by striking out the side.Â
- Brooklyn scored 10 runs on nine hits in the bottom of the frame off York's Ayana Saavedra (L, 3-7; 4 IP, 16 H, 3 ER, BB). A pair of RBI triples from Melanie Millan (2-for-3, 2 R, 3 RBI), and a triple and run-scoring double from Lianna Gonzalez (3-for-4, 3 R, 2 RBI) keyed the scoring output.
- Sage Bernstein's RBI base knock in the bottom of the second frame added an 11th run to the Bulldogs' line.
- Zoey Van Vleet plated home two additional runs in the home half of the third to make the score 13-0.
- York got on the board in the fourth inning. Madison Plaza singled and stole second and third base, subsequently scoring on a Jeana Clemons RBI single.
- Saavedra pitched a scoreless bottom of the fourth to keep the 13-1 score intact.Â
- Guzzardi recorded two punchouts and one groundout in the fifth stanza to seal the 13-1 decision.
Game 2: Brooklyn 15, York 0 (5 Inn.)
- Brooklyn took an early 3-0 lead on the strength of three free passes and a 2-RBI double from Van Vleet (3-for-3, R, 3 RBI).
- Run-scoring extra-base hits from Millan and Gonzalez (2-for-2, 2 R, 2 RBI, 2 BB) extended the Bulldogs' edge to 5-0 in the bottom of the second.
- The Cardinals threatened in the top of the third frame with a Simranjit Kaur walk followed by a Plaza single. Brooklyn starter Molly Martin (W, 3-6; 5 IP, 2 H, BB, 10 S) induced a
- Samantha Panameno groundout to end the threat.
- RBI singles by Ashley Konner (2-for-3, 2 R, 2 RBI) and Jenna Hood in the bottom of the third added two more runs to the Bulldogs' register.
- Breaking the game open, Brooklyn brought home eight runs on five hits, three walks, and a trio of errors. Gonzalez's RBI double capped off the scoring outburst.
- Martin struck out the side in the fifth inning to clinch the 15-0 result.Â
- Saavedra (L, 3-8; 4 IP, 11 H, 5 ER, 6 BB) was charged with the loss for York.
