York College softball competed Monday afternoon against the John Jay College Bloodhounds (18-8, 4-0 CUNYAC), dropping a pair of games in the CUNYAC standings by the final count of 21-2 and 20-0 from Padavan-Preller Fields.Â
Game 1: John Jay 21, York 2 (5 Inn.)
- John Jay opened the game with a 16-run inning, totaling 12 hits and capitalizing on four costly errors that led to an early advantage on Ayana Saavedra (L, 3-9: 5 IP, 24 H, 6 ER, 4 BB, 2 SO) and the Cardinals. Maleea Gallaspy (2-for-2, 2, R, 2 RBI) stroked a leadoff double, advanced to third on a throwing error, and scored on a fielding error to bring in the game's first run. Six batters later, Angelina Schoelles (2-for-2, 2 R, 4 RBI) singled home Alyssa Cadolino (1-for-1, 2 R, 2 RBI) for what would prove to be the game-winning run, giving John Jay a 3-0 lead.
- After going down in order in the first inning, Michelle Mancuso worked a one-out walk and stole second to become York's first baserunner. John Jay starter Natalie Graham (ND: 2 IP, 0 H, 1 BB, 5 SO / 3-for-3, 3 R, RBI) bounced back to strike out the next two Cardinals, ending the threat.
- Reliever Kendal Bryant (W, 1-0: 3 IP, 0 H, 0 ER, 7 BB, 3 SO) issued a pair of free passes in the third. Madison Plaza stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error but was ultimately stranded.
- Saavedra scattered three hits but regained form by tossing a scoreless fifth.
- Trailing 21-0, the Cardinals made a late push, drawing five walks off Bryant. Samantha Panameno worked a walk to bring Tyla Hooks home for York's first run. Bryant then uncorked a wild pitch that allowed Mulazia Woods (0-for-0, 2 BB, R) to score. Alyssa De La Rosa also drew a walk before Jeana Clemons was retired with the bases loaded to end the game.
Game 2: John Jay 20, York 0 (5 Inn.)
- The Bloodhounds batted around twice in the top of the first, plating 14 runs on nine hits and seven follies off Saavedra (L, 3-10: 5 IP, 18 H, 6 ER, 2 BB, SO). Bryant (3-for-3, 2 R, 3 RBI) and Gallaspy (2-for-2, 3 R, 2 RBI) provided the extra-base hits during the scoring spree.
- Bryant's RBI single in the second frame tacked on another run for John Jay to make it 15-0.
- Mancuso singled in the bottom of the second, but Kiki Iglesias (W, 2-0; 2 H, 4 SO) got the final two outs of the inning to strand her at first base.
- Consecutive run-scoring doubles by Genon Thomas and Olivia Paoli (2-for-2, 3 RBI) in the fourth pushed the Bloodhound edge to 19-0.
- In the home half of the frame, Clemons recorded York's second hit of the game with a two-out single.
- Paoli's RBI single capped off the 20-0 scoreline in the fifth.
