BELLEROSE, NYÂ --- (
www.YORKATHLETICS.com) York College softball returned home Monday afternoon to face the Lehman College Lightning in a non-conference doubleheader, dropping 17–3 and 17-1 decisions at Padavan-Preller Fields.
Game 1: Lehman 17, York 3 (5 Inn.)
- Lehman struck first with a seven-run opening frame on Simranjit Kaur (L, 0-3; 5 IP. 12 H. 12 ER. 5 BB, 3 SO). Patria Sanchez doubled to drive in the game's initial runs. A series of plays followed as a fielder's choice, wild pitch and a fielding error each contributing to a 5-run cushion. Elba Gonzalez (3-for-3, 2 R, 2 RBI, BB, SB) doubled home a run to put Lehman up by six before Yudelis Pena (0-for-0, 2 R, RBI, BB, SB) capped off the big frame with a sacrifice fly to make it a 7-run game. Â
- The Cardinals pushed back against Jireh Espina (W, 3-7; 5 IP, 4 H, 3 ER, 3 BB, 8 SO) in the first inning. Michelle Mancuso delivered a two-run single, driving in Madison Plaza and Samantha Panameno (1-for-2, 2 R, BB, 2 SB) to cut the deficit to five.
- After Lehman compiled eight more runs in the second, and one in the third, Jeana Clemons ripped a single to right field to score Panameno for York's third run.
- Kaur settled in and tossed a scoreless fourth inning before a Crystal Lopez sacrifice fly brought Mairobi Taveraz home, sealing the 17–3 final.
Game 2: Lehman 17, York 1 (5 Inn.)
- The Lightning brought 12 batters to the plate in the first inning, scoring seven runs off five hits, four walks, and four stolen bases. Espina's (2-for-2, R, RBI) RBI triple, and
- Angelina Perez's run-scoring double were the big extra-base hits in the frame.
- A pair of two-run singles from Elba Gonzalez (2-for-2, 2 R, 4 RBI) and Crystal Lopez helped extend Lehman's advantage to 12-0 in the top of the second.Â
- After reaching third base on a walk and two wild pitches, Amaniya Aiken plated Mancuso via an RBI groundout in the second inning to get York on the board.
- RBI base hits from Gonzalez and Jelene Figueroa in the third stanza added three runs to Lehman's total.
- Lightning starter Angelina Perez (W, 3-2; 5 IP, 2 H, R, 3 BB, 5 SO) struck out the side in the bottom of the third to keep the score at 15-1.
- Cardinal reliever Ayana Saavedra recorded a scoreless fourth frame.
- Threatening with a runner at second base and out, Perez induced a groundout and a strikeout to end a possible fourth-inning rally.
- Lehman tacked on two more runs in the fifth stanza to finish the scoring.
- Panameno popped up with runners on first and second and two outs to close out a 17-1 result.Â
- Kaur (L, 0-4; 2 IP, 8 H, 11 ER, 7 BB, 2 SO) was tagged with the loss.
