Gomez nails down 17 kills to highlight @yorkcardinals Men's Volleyball’s effort against Hunter

York College returns to action Thursday (Mar. 6) with a CUNYAC road matchup at Medgar Evers College

JAMAICA, NY-- (www.YORKATHLETICS.com) York College men's volleyball served up their CUNYAC home slate Tuesday evening with a hard-fought battle against the Hunter College Hawks (8-6, 4-0 CUNYAC). The teams traded leads throughout the match, but the Cardinals ultimately fell short in a 27-25, 25-11, 25-18 defeat inside York College Gymnasium.

First Set Breakdown
  • Hunter got off to a 3-0 start after points from Wyatt Kotuk and Jon Pflueger.
  • The Cardinals leveled the score (3-3) with an ace by Alexis Ramirez.
  • Both squads split the next 30 points, as a kill from York's Sebastian Gomez made it 18 a piece.
  • Ramirez's ace to push the score to 21-19 was the first time the Cardinals held a two-point advantage.
  • Another Gomez spike gave York two set points (24-22).
  • A pair of Pflueger aces put the Hawks up 25-24, and smackdowns from Ahmed Mohamed and Kyle Foley sealed a 27-25 result.
Second Set Breakdown
  • Foley's kill capped off a 10-5 blitz.
  • George Lucas' spike extended the margin to double-digits (18-8).
  • Mohamed served three aces late on to facilitate a 25-11 Hunter victory. 
Third Set Breakdown
  • Leading 7-5, Mohamed tallied another trio of aces to give the Hawks a six-point edge (11-6).
  • Going back and forth, Hunter pushed its advantage to eight (22-14) 
  • A 4-0 spurt from the Cardinals trimmed the deficit to four (22-18).
  • The Hawks claimed the final three points for a 25-18 decision. 
Leading the Cardinals
  • Gomez starred for the Cardinals, attacking at a clip of .448 with 17 kills on 29 swings. The freshman sensation has reached double-digit kills in all 11 matches, including seven contests with 15 or more kills.
  • David Heyliger, Jr. followed with eight kills.
  • Ramirez chipped in with four kills (.429%) and led York with two aces and five digs. 
  • Stanley Sanchez moved York's offense with 27 assists.
  • Ian McIntosh totaled two kills and the team's lone block.   
  • Vincent Agokei added two kills.
For Hunter
  • Hunter was led by a pair of 16.5 point performances from Mohamed and Pflueger.
  • Mohamed posted nine kills (.615%), six aces, and three blocks, while Pflueger went for nine kills (.692%), five aces, and 2.5 blocks.
  • Foley contributed seven kills (.462%) and four aces.
  • Wesley Stubbs dished out 27 assists.
Inside the Box Score
Hunter smacked down 33 kills on a .475 attack percentage, while the Cardinals managed a .308 swing rate on 33 kills as well. Additionally, the Hawks had the edge in points (59-37), aces (19-3), total blocks (13-1), and assists (31-29). Defensively, York scooped up 19 digs to Hunter's 13.
