www.YORKATHLETICS.com) York College men's volleyball battled closely in the opening sets Tuesday evening before the John Jay College Bloodhounds (12-5, 4-2 CUNYAC) closed out the CUNYAC match in straight sets (25-21, 25-23, 25-15) from York College Gymnasium.
First Set Breakdown
- McIntosh's kill leveled the score at seven.
- A smackdown from Jaden Lamarre gave John Jay a 12-9 advantage.
- The Bloodhounds steadily increased their lead to six (20-14) with an 8-5 spurt.
- Nick Fuentes' kill put John Jay at set point (24-17).
- The Cardinals claimed four consecutive points before another Fuentes spike sealed a 25-21 result.
Second Set Breakdown
- Smackdowns by David Heyliger, Jr. and Sebastian Gomez gave York a set-high four-point edge (9-5).
- Points from Omar Alaoui, Sebastian Rodriguez, Steven Ajazi, and Adam Bainey sparked a 7-1 for the Bloodhounds to go up 12-10.
- Responding well, Gomez and Heyliger, Jr. recorded two kills each to spark a Cardinals 6-1 burst, giving themselves a three-point lead (16-13).
- Trailing 18-16, a 4-0 John Jay spurt put them up 20-18.
- York knotted the score at 22 following a kill from Alexis Ramirez.
- Having momentum, the Cardinals could not get over the line, as an attack error closed out a 25-23 period.
Third Set Breakdown
- Tied at six, the Bloodhounds embarked on an 8-0 blitz to take an eight-point advantage (14-6).
- John Jay had a set-high 11-point margin (20-9) after a York attack error.
- Trading points, Bainey's smackdown finalized a 25-15 decision.
Leading the Cardinals
- Gomez was the high man for York, finishing with 13 kills on 27 swings to attack at a rate of .333. He also added one ace, one block assist, and four digs.
- Heyliger, Jr. followed behind with 11.5 points, posting nine kills, 1.5 blocks, and one ace while scooping three digs.
- Stanley Sanchez moved the team's offense with a match-leading 25 assists and chipped in defensively with five digs.
- Ramirez (one ace, one block assist) and McIntosh (1.5 blocks) each nailed down two kills and finished with 3.5 points.
- Vincent Agokei (two block assists), Ahmed Algendy (five digs), and Joseph Lebron (one ace) also contributed to the effort.
For John Jay
- Fuentes produced a match-high 17 kills (.571 percentage) and co-authored one block to pace John Jay.
- Jimmy Thinlay handed out 23 assists and Daniel Gonzalez Verdejo dished out 12 helpers. Thinlay also added one block and five digs to his stat line.
- Eugene Villarruz picked up a match-best eight digs.
- Bainey (seven kills), Rodriguez (five kills), and Alaoui (five kills) all added to John Jay's attack.
Inside the Box Score
York concluded the match hitting .113 with 27 kills on 80 attempts. By comparison, the Bloodhounds attacked at a rate of .388 with 42 kills on 80 swings. The Cardinals owned the edge in aces (4-2), blocks (5-2), and digs (23-22) as John Jay outplayed York in points (46-36) and assists (40-26).
