@yorkcardinals Men’s Volleyball tops CCNY for CUNYAC triumph at Lehman tri-match

York College plays host Tuesday (Mar. 4) to CUNYAC competitor Hunter College

BRONX, NY --- (www.YORKATHLETICS.com) York College men's volleyball overcame the City College of New York Beavers (2-10, 1-4) in four sets (25-20, 25-14, 21-25, 26-24) Saturday afternoon. Earlier in the day, the team lost a five-set thriller (25-18, 25-15, 24-26, 22-25, 15-4) to the Lehman College Lightning (10-2, 3-2) in the first part of a CUNYAC tri-match inside APEX Main Gym.

Match 1: Lehman 3, York 2 (25-18, 25-15, 24-26, 22-25, 15-4)

First Set Breakdown
  • Tied at eight, a pair of kills by Sebastian Gomez gave York a 12-9 edge.
  • Lehman leveled the score at 13 after a kill from Emmanuel Cochran.
  • A trio of Lightning attack errors got the Cardinals a two-point edge (18-16).
  • Spikes by Cochran, Almir Pepic, and Emmanuel Oladosu closed out a 9-0 Lehman blitz for a 25-18 result.
Second Set Breakdown
  • The Lightning got off to an 8-4 start.
  • York maintained a four-point deficit, as Alexis Ramirez's smackdown made it a 17-13 scoreline.
  • On the serve of John Zerafa, Lehman finalized a 7-1 scoring spree to triumph 25-15.
Third Set Breakdown
  • The Cardinals maintained a four-point lead (10-6) after the first 16 points.
  • Storming back, Cochran's ace capped off an 8-2 burst to give the Lightning a two-point margin (14-12),
  • Trailing 16-13, four kills from Gomez sparked a 6-0 York flurry on the way to a 19-16 edge.
  • Chipping away, Cochran's ace leveled the score at 23.
  • At 24 all, Gomez pounded down a pair of kills to seal a 26-24 victory.
Fourth Set Breakdown
  • A service ace from David Heyliger, Jr. got York off to a 10-5 beginning.
  • Lehman trimmed the deficit to one (12-11) before spikes from Ramirez, Heyliger, Jr., and Ian McIntosh made it a 16-11 scoreline.
  • Ramirez's smackdown appeared to give the Cardinals control at 22-18.
  • Neithan Pilay's kill gave the Lightning life (23-22), but York responded with points from Heyliger, Jr., and Ramirez to knot the match up at two sets.
Fifth Set Breakdown
  • The Lightning regained momentum via an 8-1 opening stand.
  • York never had a footing in the final frame, as Pepic recorded the final kill to author a 15-4 decision.
Leading the Cardinals 
  • Gomez generated team-highs in kills (13) and digs (14).
  • Ramirez and Heyliger, Jr. both contributed seven kills.
  • Vincent Agokei brought home six kills with a .308 swing rate.
  • McIntosh tallied five kills, Ahmed Algendy scooped up 13 digs, and Stanley Sanchez set up the attack with 36 assists. 
For Lehman
  • Pepic totaled a team-best 16 kills to go along with 10 digs and three block assists. 
  • Cochran added 10 kills, 10 digs, and five total assists. 
  • Oscar Calderon swatted down nine kills (.600 percentage) and matched Cochran's five-block mark.
  • Ray Rodriguez (11) and Levi Rosario (10) recorded double-digit digs and Christian Agudo facilitated the attack with a team-leading 27 assists.

The Lightning maintained an edge in points (71-43), kills (50-32), aces (10-3), total blocks (16-2), assists (36-26), and digs (49-39). On the attack, Lehman registered a .156 attack percentage on 135 swings, while York attacked at a .041 clip on 146 attempts. 

Match 2: York 3, CCNY 1 (25-20, 25-14, 21-25, 26-24)

First Set Breakdown
  • A kill by Ramirez gave York a 12-8 edge after the first 20 points.
  • Spikes from CCNY's Reng Chen and Alex Abraham made it a one-point affair.
  • The Cardinals claimed the following four points for a set-high five-point margin (18-13).
  • Gomez sealed a 25-20 victory with a kill.
Second Set Breakdown
  • Two smackdowns from Heyliger, Jr. and Gomez had York up 6-1.
  • Ahead 7-5, the Cardinals went on a 6-0 burst to lead 13-5.
  • Points by Brandon Green and Kyrylo Vysotskyy trimmed the deficit to five (18-13) for the Beavers before York pulled away for a 25-14 result.
Third Set Breakdown
  • The Cardinals held a narrow advantage for much of the opening action, as Ramirez's smackdown made the score 12-9. 
  • A trio of aces from Vysotskyy sparked a CCNY 6-0 scoring spree to lead 15-12.
  • York re-took control at 17-16 following two Gomez spikes.
  • Tied at 19, kills by Green, Nana Boateng, and Alex Abraham helped the Beavers finish the period with a 6-2 surge.
Fourth Set Breakdown
  • Algendy got into the offensive party with a kill at 10-7.
  • CCNY's subsequent 5-1 spurt made the score 12-11.
  • Going back and forth, the frame was knotted at 20 after Abraham's kill. 
  • Two kills from Heyliger, Jr. opened up three match points for the Cardinals (24-21).
  • The Beavers saved all three possible setbacks, as blocks by Green and Anirudha Das tied the score at 24.
  • York responded by claiming the final two points for a 26-24 decision.
Leading the Cardinals 
  • Gomez powered home a game-high 25 kills (.365 percentage) and scooped up seven digs.
  • Ramirez accumulated 10 digs, a team-leading four aces, and contributed defensively with seven digs. 
  • Heyliger, Jr. produced 10 kills on 24 attacks (.292 %).
  • Sanchez kept the attack moving with 47 assists. 
  • Joseph Lerbon reigned huge all day with a career-high 12 digs. 
For CCNY
  • Boateng (11 kills, 10 digs) and Alex Abraham (10 kills, 10 digs) recorded double-doubles. 
  • Green registered seven kills and a team-best three block assists.
  • Vysotskyy served four aces and orchestrated the offense with 34 assists to go along with four aces.  
  • Amir Nabiyev (5 kills) and Alex Ma (10 digs) aided the team's efforts. 
Inside the Box Score
York held the advantage in points (62-51), kills (51-37), total attacks (130-110), and assists (49-37), while the Beavers had the upper hand in aces (8-7), total blocks (10-5), and digs (43-38). At the net, the Cardinals struck at a .223 clip, as opposed to CCNY's .100 rate.
