Barrett’s double-double lifts @yorkcardinals Men’s Basketball past CCNY with 71-65 victory

York College plays next (Feb. 7) in a CUNYAC road encounter against Lehman College

NEW YORK--- (www.YORKATHLETICS.com) York College men's basketball controlled play on the road Tuesday as the Cardinals registered a trio of double-digit scorers to key a 71-65 CUNYAC road win against the City College of New York Beavers (7-9, 2-7) inside Nat Holman Gymnasium.

How it Happened
  • Malakai Clark's layup opened up a 10-6 start for the Cardinals.
  • David Leye's triple for CCNY leveled the score at 14.
  • York responded with a 7-0 burst to take a first-half high seven-point lead (21-14) at the 7:34 mark.
  • Finding their feet, the Beavers once again evened the contest, as a 3-pointer by Michael Bowman made it 27-all with 2:07 remaining in the half.
  • Michael Litchfield produced a four-point play to put the Cardinals right back in front (31-27).
  • Elijah Patterson's layup with 32 seconds left to pull CCNY within two (33-31) at intermission.
  • York caught fire in the second-half, hitting 5-of-8 from 3-point land and 7-of-8 of its freebies.
  • Slowly extending its advantage, Aidony Nivar's downtown boom gave York its first double-digit margin of the night (48-38).
  • Another Nivar triple at 9:06 maintained a 10-point margin (57-47).
  • Controlling the pace of play, Brandon Barrett's layup gave the Cardinals a 13-point edge (66-53) with 4:31 on the clock. This was the second such instance where the team held a 13-point lead.
  • Attempting a comeback, the Beavers trimmed the deficit to three (68-65) following Justin Morety's layup with 28 seconds remaining. 
  • A pair of free throws by Rohan Singh sealed a 71-65 result.
Leading the Cardinals
  • Barrett dominated inside with 18 points (9-of-18 FG) and a career-high 20 rebounds to post his fifth-straight double-double (11th-career). He also added three blocks, three assists and two steals to his stat line.
  • Nivar canned 4-of-6 from 3-point territory to net 14 points.
  • Litchfield scored 11 points and dished out five assists.
  • Clark and Singh each followed with eight points, while Kai Holland scored seven off the bench.
For CCNY
  • Morety led all scorers with 20 points (9-of-17 FG), while producing seven rebounds, five assists and two steals.
  • Patterson finished with 10 points as Bowman and Leye and scored nine apiece.
Inside the Box Score
The Cardinals connected on 47.5 percent (28-of-58 FG), 38.9 percent (7-of-18) from beyond the arc, and 72.7 percent (8-of-11) from the free throw line.  By comparison, CCNY hit 48.2 percent (27-of-56) from the floor, 40.9 percent (9-of-22) from 3-point range, and just 28.6 (2-of-7) from the stripe. The Cardinals owned the advantage in blocks (3-2) and won the boards battle (36-31) while scoring 15 points off 13 CCNY turnovers.  Inside, York outscored the Beavers by 10 (36-26) in the paint and also grabbed nine offensive boards compared to CCNY's seven. The Beavers edged York in steals (6-5) and assists (18-15).
