www.YORKATHLETICS.com) York College men's volleyball opened their 2025 league schedule Sunday afternoon against the Baruch College Bearcats (5-7, 4-0 CUNYAC), challenging the defending CUNYAC champions, but fell in straight sets (25-18, 25-19, 25-19) inside ARC Arena.
First Set Breakdown
- An ace from David Heyliger, Jr. put York up 7-6.
- The Bearcats responded with a 4-0 mini spurt to lead 10-7.
- Ian McIntosh smacked one home for the Cardinals, making it a one-point margin (12-11).
- Ahead 15-13, Ryan Oomen's kill capped off a 7-1 Baruch burst to extend the advantage to eight (22-14).
- York got it to within six multiple times before the Bearcats sealed a 25-18 result.
Second Set Breakdown
- Trading points, a kill by Sebastian Gomez gave York a one-point edge (11-10).
- Helped by four points from Peter Gavroff, Baruch surged ahead with an 11-2 burst to lead 21-13.
- The Cardinals trimmed the deficit to five (23-18) following a Heyliger, Jr. kill, but it was not enough as David Tang spiked home the set-winning kill at 25-19.
Third Set Breakdown
- An attack error gave the Bearcats an early 7-4 cushion.
- Block assists by Gomez and Stanley Sanchez leveled the score at nine.
- Going back and forth, Heyliger, Jr.'s kill evened the stanza at 13.
- Baruch slowly took control, as Kairos Liang's smackdown completed a 9-3 scoring spree to lead 22-16.
- York made it a four-point affair (22-18) before the Bearcats closed out a 25-19 decision.
Leading the Cardinals
- Gomez produced a team-leading 11.5 points on 10 kills and 1.5 blocks.
- Heyliger, Jr. nailed down six kills and added four digs, one ace, and a block assist to his stat line.
- Sanchez directed York's offense with 21 assists, served one ace, and scooped a team-best five digs.
- McIntosh recorded 2.5 blocks and two kills.
- Iteoluwakiisi Adegboye delivered one ace and hit a pair of kills.
- Alexis Ramirez chipped in with three kills.
For Baruch
- Gavroff racked up 11 kills on 17 swings, to go along with three aces and two block assists.
- Oommen handed out 22 assists.
- Tang tallied a match-high nine digs.
- Liang went for six kills as Zachary Yao totaled five points, including four block assists.
Inside the Box Score
York finished the match hitting .072 with 24 kills, compared to 30 kills and a .176 attacking rate for Baruch. The Cardinals owned the edge with a 5-4 advantage in blocks, its third-highest total of the season. Baruch outplayed York in points (40-32), aces (6-3), assists (28-24) and digs (23-17).
