@yorkcardinals Men’s Volleyball tops CCNY to claim first season-opening win since 2019

York College plays its home opener Tuesday (Feb. 4) against Pratt Institute

BRONXVILLE, NY --- (www.YORKATHLETICS.com) York College men's volleyball put together a convincing four-set triumph (16-25, 25-16, 25-25, 25-8) over the City College of New York Beavers (0-3) Saturday afternoon to capture their first season-opening win since 2019.  The Cardinals followed with a highly contested setback in three sets (25-20, 27-25, 25-22) to the host Sarah Lawrence College Gryphons to cap off a non-conference tri-match inside Caminside Campbell Sports Center.

Match 1: York 3, CCNY 1 (16-25, 25-16, 25-15,25-8)

First Set Breakdown
  • An ace by David Heyliger, Jr. put York up 4-2.
  • The Beavers took control with a 7-0 burst to lead 9-4.
  • CCNY extended its advantage to seven (15-8) following an ace by Reng Chen. 
  • The Cardinals claimed the following two points to trim the deficit to five (15-10), but that was the closest margin of the set, as CCNY cruised to a 25-16 victory. 
Second Set Breakdown
  • York blitzed the Beavers 11-0 to open the frame. 
  • Sebastian Gomez's ace gave York a set-high 12-point edge (13-1).
  • Attempting a comeback, an extended 9-4 spurt for the Beavers cut the margin to seven (17-10).
  • Both squads went back and forth the next 11 points, with the Cardinals maintaining a solid 22-16 edge. 
  • Two attack errors and a Gomez kill sealed a 25-16 win for York. 
Third Set Breakdown
  • The Beavers took the first two points of the stanza.
  • Three aces by Ian McIntosh capped off a 9-1 charge for the Cardinals, giving them a 9-3 advantage.
  • Steadily increasing the lead, York took its first double-digit edge (17-7) following another McIntosh kill.
  • A split of the final 18 points helped the Cardinals to a 25-15 triumph.
Fourth Set Breakdown
  • Alexis Ramirez's smackdown capped off a 6-1 start for York.
  • The teams split the following 10 points, as the Cardinals held onto a five-point advantage (11-6).
  • Putting the pedal to the medal, York utilized a 14-2 burst to seal their first win against CCNY since April 5, 2016, when the Cardinals triumphed in five sets (23-25, 25-20, 23-25, 25-16, 15-10) at home.
Leading the Cardinals 
  • Heyliger, Jr. shined with a game-high 20 kills and 32 attacks (.375 percentage) to go along with seven digs. 
  • Gomez debuted with 10 kills on 27 attacks (.148 percentage), served a team-best five digs, and scooped up eight digs. 
  • Stanley Sanchez directed the offense with 39 assists and added three aces. 
  • McIntosh tallied seven points (four kills and three aces) and contributed defensively with five digs. 
  • Ramirez authored six kills and eight digs. 
  • Ahmed Algendy played a large part in York's defensive display with eight digs as well.
  • Iteoluwakiisi Adegboye registered a team-best two blocks.
For CCNY
  • Nana Boateng smacked down a team-best seven kills to go along with three aces and seven digs.
  • Chen generated a solid stat line of five kills, three aces, and five digs.
  • Alex Ma scooped up a team-leading nine digs, and Kyrylo Vysotskyy accounted for 16 assists. 
Inside the Box Score
Beyond the scoreline, York dominated in points (57-32), kills (42-20), assists (40-17), and digs (37-25), while the Beavers served two more aces (14-12). On the attack, the Cardinals hit at a .223 clip, as opposed to the Beavers' rate of -.025.

Match 2: Sarah Lawrence 3, York 0 (25-20, 27-25, 25-22)

First Set Breakdown

  • The Cardinals got out to an early 7-4 advantage.
  • York maintained its three-point edge (9-6) following a kill by McIntosh. 
  • A pair of aces by Nathan Dreger gave Sarah Lawrence its first lead (10-9) of the contest.
  • Aidan Roney's kill capped off an extended 11-2 run from the Gryphons, opening up a 17-11 margin. 
  • Both squads went back and forth, with Ralph Calle-Schulz's kill closing out a 25-20 scoreline.

Second Set Breakdown

  • The stanza featured four ties in the opening eight points, as both teams were level at four.
  • Sarah Lawrence opened up a set-high four-point advantage (12-8) following a 4-0 burst.
  • Spearheaded by Gomez's three kills back, York turned a 16-13 deficit into a 19-16 advantage.
  • A 4-1 mini spurt from the Gryphons leveled the score at 20.
  • With the final portion of the frame featuring four ties and one lead change, Dreger's kill punctuated a 27-25 triumph.  

Third Set Breakdown

  • A pair of McIntosh aces sparked a 7-2 opening for the Cardinals.
  • Regaining momentum, Sarah Lawrence exploded with a 9-1 burst to lead 11-8.
  • Attempting to take back control, kills by Ramirez, Gomez, and Heyliger, Jr. got York back in front 16-15.
  • That momentum did not last, as the Gryphons opened up a 24-17 advantage following a 9-1 charge.
  • A trio of kills by Gomez trimmed the deficit to two (24-22) before Nate Davis slammed down the exclamation mark for Sarah Lawrence with a match-ending kill. 
Leading the Cardinals 
  • Gomez recorded a match-best 16 kills and added five digs.
  • Heyliger, Jr. smacked down 11 kills and scooped up a team-leading eight digs.
  • Ramirez registered seven kills, one blocked shot and served two aces.
  • Sanchez tallied his second-consecutive 30+ assist effort, setting up his teammates with 32 assists.
  • McIntosh served a team-high three aces. 
For Sarah Lawrence
  • Davis totaled team-bests in kills (13) and digs (9).
  • Dreger added five kills, three aces, and one solo block.
  • Calle-Schulz (5), Roney (4), and Lucas Buckley (4) combined for 13 kills.
  • Alex Xie authored 30 assists. 
Inside the Box Score
York edged the Gryphons in kills (35-33), total attacks (84-78), assists (33-30). Both teams produced points (45) and digs (27). At the net, Sarah Lawrence attacked at a .244 clip, while the Cardinals produced a .190 hitting percentage.
