@yorkcardinals Women’s Volleyball opens road stretch at NJCU

York College returns to the court Saturday (Nov. 1) with a CUNYAC matchup at Lehman College

JERSEY CITY, NJ--- (www.YORKATHLETICS.com) York College women's volleyball traveled on Thursday evening for a non-conference match against New Jersey City University (13-6), falling in straight sets (25-6, 25-7, 25-3) inside the John J. Moore Athletics and Fitness Center. The contest marked the beginning of a four-match stretch for the Cardinals.

First Set Breakdown 
  • The Cardinals held a 4-3 edge early on.
  • New Jersey City responded with an 8-0 run to lead 11-4.
  • The Gothic Knights continued to assert their dominance, outdueling York 14-2 in the following 16 points to take the first set. A trio of aces by Diane Pugay and Kristen Davis sparked the extended stretch.
Second Set Breakdown 
  • Five aces by Rae Marrero buoyed a 10-0 opening for New Jersey City.
  • York claimed two out of the following three points to make the scoreline 11-2. 
  • Four service aces by Kiley Jurcisin helped extend the Gothic Knights' advantage to 15 (18-3).
  • Consecutive kills by Madison Plaza and Simranjit Kaur trimmed the deficit to 13 (20-7) before New Jersey City claimed the final five points of a 25-7 decision.
Third Set Breakdown 
  • The Gothic Knights got off to another early start by the tune of 6-1.
  • A large 16-0 stretch pushed the match out of reach at 22-1. 
  • Brianna Melanson's kill sealed a 25-3 result.
Leading the Cardinals For  New Jersey City
  • Pugay authored an all-around effort of six kills, four aces, and a match-leading seven aces. 
  • Davis served five aces, and Kai Fitzpatrick contributed a team-best seven kills.
  • Marrero impressed offensively with seven aces and 16 assists.

York attacked at a rate of -.386 on 44 attempts. The Gothic Knight registered 45 swings on a .378 attack percentage. Additionally, New Jersey City had the upper hand in points (49-4), kills (21-4), assists (16-2), aces (24-0), total blocks (6-0), and digs (17-15).
