York College completes homestand Tuesday (Oct. 7) with a non-conference battle versus University of Valley Forge

JAMAICA, NY--- (www.YORKATHLETICS.com) York College women's volleyball suited up Friday evening against the SUNY Old Westbury Panthers (3-6). After taking 17 points in a competitive first-set victory, the Cardinals fell in four frames (19-25, 25-13, 25-22, 25-9) in the non-conference matchup inside York College Gymnasium.  

First Set Breakdown 
  • Madison Plaza's ace capped off York's 5-1 start.
  • Consecutive kills from Zia Lefebvre put the score at 8-4.
  • A mini 5-2 spurt from the Panthers trimmed the deficit to one (10-9).
  • Getting some breathing room, Jaymie Mateo served an ace to finish an 8-3 stretch, extending the Cardinals' lead to six (18-12).
  • Attempting a comeback, kills by Stephanie Maser, Kasey Coppola, and Mya Murphy made it a 21-19 scoreline.
  • Putting the set away, a pair of Lefebvre sealed the 25-21 result. 
Second Set Breakdown 
  • Both teams split the opening eight points (4-4).
  • The Panthers took control with a 10-2 burst, going ahead 14-6.
  • Nicole Zugnoni's kill gave Old Westbury its first double-digit advantage (17-7).
  • Maser's kill closed out the frame at 25-13.
Third Set Breakdown 
  • A back-and-forth beginning, York had the upper hand (5-4) following a Panther service error.
  • Sofia Lopez served an ace to culminate a 5-1 run to give Old Westbury a 9-6 edge.
  • Another kill by Maser made it 13-8, and Stephanie Velez's kill extended the margin to a set-high seven points (18-11).
  • York utilized a 7-1 spurt to close the gap to two points (20-18). 
  • Both squads split the next eight points, making the score 24-22.
  • A Cardinal attack error ended the possible comeback at 25-22.
Fourth Set Breakdown 
  • The Panthers sprinted out to a 17-1 advantage on the serves of Velez and Katia Gomez.
  • Samantha Panameno's ace was York's final point of the contest, ultimately falling 25-9.
Leading the Cardinals
  • Lefebvre paced the team with 15 points (12 kills, two aces, and one block) and continued her standout defensive play with 18 digs. That statline is the freshman's fourth double-double of the campaign.
  • Plaza tallied six kills and one ace.
  • Panameno produced an all-around match with three aces, seven digs, and a team-high 17 assists.
  • Mateo (three kills and five digs), Chimaya Foy (two kills and two solo blocks), and Simranjit Kaur (seven digs) all contributed to the Cardinal cause.
For Old Westbury
  • Maser spiked down a match-best 19 kills and scooped up 14 digs
  • Zugnoni powered home 13 kills on an efficient .565 attacking rate. 
  • Velez chipped in with eight kills and served up a team-leading four aces. 
  • Lopez totaled a high of 21 digs, and Gomez orchestrated the offense with 36 assists.
Inside the Box Score
York produced 107 total attempts and hit at a .065 percentage. The Panthers managed 121 swings with a .289 rate. Old Westbury also maintained an advantage in points (63-36), kills (53-25), aces (9-8), assists (46-20), and digs (63-43), while the Cardinals tallied the contest's three solo block
