www.YORKATHLETICS.com) York College men's basketball produced four double-digit scorers, including a standout performance by
Brandon Barrett, but could not push past the John Jay College Bloodhounds (14-5, 7-1 CUNYAC) in a highly contested 79-70 road CUNYAC setback Tuesday evening from The Doghouse.
How it Happened
- Aidony Nivar's step-back jumper capped off a 9-3 start for the Cardinals.
- John Jay responded with a swift 6-0 run to level the score at nine.
- Trailing 16-12, the Bloodhounds went on a 9-0 burst to lead 21-16 at the 12:20 mark of the first half.
- Gradually increasing its advantage, John Jay took the game's first double-digit margin (34-24) following a Syl Granda triple with 6:10 remaining.
- A 7-0 charge from York made it a one-possession (34-31) affair.
- The Bloodhounds closed out the first period with a 10-4 spurt, as Keyshawn Miller's layup with 28 seconds left pushed the edge to nine (44-35).
- York came out of intermission with an 8-4 start, trimming the deficit to four (47-43) with 16 minutes showing on the clock.
- Granda's 3-pointer at the 10:33 point of the second half finished off a 14-5 scoring spree for John Jay, pushing its advantage to a game-high 13 points (61-48).
- Two triples from Rohan Singh and a downtown connection by Nivar made it a five-point margin (63-58) at the 6:44 mark of the frame.
- Still having a pulse, Michael Litchfield's three-point basket made it a 71-65 game with 2:23 remaining, but Jamir Stewart responded with his own triple for John Jay to keep the lead at
- three possessions (74-65).
- The Bloodhounds wound down the final 2+ minutes of action to close out a 79-70 victory.
Leading the Cardinals
- Barrett finished with 11 points (5-of-9 FG) and 17 rebounds to post his fourth-straight double-double (10th of the season). In 39 minutes of action, the freshman sensation also added seven blocks and six assists to his stat line.
- Nivar went for a team-best 14 points (5-of-12FG).
- Malakai Clark followed with 13 points (6-of-11 FG) to register his second-straight double-digit performance.
- Litchfield contributed 10 points (2-of-5 3FG)
- Demitrius Gould compiled seven points, five assists, four rebounds, and a steal.
For John Jay
- Jeremiah Cardi and Miller led all scorers with 21 points apiece.
- Miller also added five steals, five assists, and three blocks while Cardi had two blocks and two steals in the win.
- Jordan Evelyn chipped in 13 points and seven assists while Granda had 11 points and 14 rebounds.
- Emmanuel Adenekan was a presence in the paint with 10 rebounds (nine offensive) and six blocks.
Inside the Box Score
York hit 40 percent (28-of-70) of its field goals, 29.2 percent (7-of-24) of its field goals, and made seven free throws. The Cardinal defense limited John Jay to 34.7 percent (25-of-62) from the field and 29.6 percent (8-of-27). At the charity stripe, the Bloodhounds added 21 points. John Jay held advantages in the rebound (50-43), assist (21-20), steal (11-5), and block (12-7) categories. The seven rejections marked a season-best effort for York. Inside, the Cardinals outscored the Bloodhounds in the paint (36-32) and in second-chance opportunities (16-13).
