FLUSHING, NY --- (www.YORKATHLETICS.com) York College's Abubakar Khamis has been recognized Wednesday by the City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) as the men's tennis Sportsmanship Award recipient. Khamis is York's second consecutive Sportsmanship Award winner, as Jagvir Hoonjan took home the distinction last campaign.

"Abubakar Khamis stepped up and took on the role of team captain. As a team leader, Khamis helps and supports his teammates every day, and has also rearranged his schedule to be able to play in all matches.  On the court, the CUNYAC Preseason Player to Watch is fighting with all his heart, and is the type of competitor who would play on one leg just to finish his match. Khamis displays the utmost respect for his teammates, coaches, opposing players and coaches, as well as officials."-said head coach Branislav Grujic

Coming into the season as a member of the 2024 CUNYAC Men's Tennis Preseason Player to Watch list, Khamis has competed in all 10 singles and doubles contests. A fixture on the No. 2 doubles and No. 3 singles courts, he grabbed his first doubles victory of the campaign against Lehman College (Apr. 23), claiming an 8-4 decision with partner Shady Kalil. Leveling up, he played on the No. 1 doubles and No. 2 singles courts against John Jay College (Apr. 26), claiming three games against AJ Esperanza individually.
