@yorkcardinals Softball celebrates Senior Day against Brooklyn

York College travels Tuesday (Apr. 23) to take on Brooklyn College in a non-conference showdown

NEW ROCHELLE, NY --- (www.YORKATHLETICS.com) York College softball took home field Friday afternoon to take on the Brooklyn College Bulldogs (7-13, 2-4 CUNYAC) in a CUNYAC doubleheader on Senior Day from Padavan-Preller Fields.  Playing from behind early, York pushed back, but were unable to overcome its early deficits, falling 11-1 in both games.

Prior to first pitch, seniors Tyler Dazey (2023-24), Lissenny Florentino (2023-24), Alcia Gumbs (2023-24) and Andrea Wright (2023-24) were recognized for their dedication to York College Athletics with the annual Senior Day Ceremony.

Game 1: Brooklyn 11, York 1 (5 Inn.)
  • Remedios Garcia (L, 2-8: 5 IP, 8 H, 9 ER, 4 BB, 3 SO) faced 11 batters in the opening frame as Brooklyn jumped out to a 5-0 lead on York.
  • A base knock by Zoey Van Vleet got Brooklyn's second-inning scoring in gear while Grismarly Mejia Brito delivered a two-run single to extend the Bulldog advantage to nine.
  • A pair of costly fielding errors allowed Brooklyn to set the table during a two-run third inning.
  • Alicia Gumbs worked a leadoff walk in the third inning for York's first base runner.  She then proceeded to swipe second and third, but was stranded in scoring position as Danielle Guzzardi (W, 6-13: 5 IP, 4 H, 0 ER, BB, 11 SO) retired a trio of Cardinals on strikes to escape unscathed.
  • Later in her outing, Garcia put it together, fanning two batters during a perfect fourth inning.
  • York broke Guzzardi's no-hit bid in the fourth as a one-out single by Michelle Mancuso. Two batters later, Faith Howes drilled a single through the right side and advanced to second on a field error that placed pinch runner Samantha Panameno on third.  Wright then stepped to the plate and went down swinging to strand runners in scoring position.
  • Madison Plaza sparked the offense.  Standing on third base Plaza was pushed across home plate by Dazey's sacrifice hit to settle the scoring.
  • Brooklyn owned the edge in hits (8-4), walks (4-1) and stolen bases (5-2).  Both teams left four on base and committed three errors.
Game 2: Brooklyn 11, York 1 (5 Inn.)
  • The Bulldogs put the game away in the first inning by tagging Ayana Saavedra (L, 2-4: 5 IP, 14 H, 10 ER, 3 BB, 2 SO) for seven runs.  Nadeen Khalil and Mejia Brito delivered the big blow with two-run singles.
  • A pair of RBI singles increased Brooklyn lead to nine before York answered in the home half of the second.  Garcia and Howes went back-to-back with singles before Panameno worked a walk off of Guzzardi (W, 7-13: 5 IP, 3 H ER, BB, 11 SO).  Following a strikeout by Gumbs, Garcia raced across home plate to score with a stolen base to break York's scoring ice.
  • Sofia Soric singled in the third to extend her hitting streak to four games, but Guzzardi rebounded by retiring the final eight batters to preserve the win for Brooklyn.
  • In the end, both teams drew even in stolen bases (2-2) while Brooklyn outplayed York in hits (14-3), walks (3-1).  Brooklyn abandoned six runners as York left two on base.  Fielding wise, York committed four errors, compared to Brooklyn's one.
